Engine Overheated on Evinrude

So be sure to check your water pump impellers. This one was just a couple years old. Unless I am mistaken, my 1966 Evinrude 60653 has no tell-tale stream. I was pretty confident impeller was ok, boy was I wrong. Maybe a crappy part that I purchased. In a matter of minutes, I overheated the engine. Smoke and smell. So after a tow back and licking my wounds, I tore the lower unit off and the impeller was toast. So disheartening. My question is, what are the odds the engine is alright? I lubricated the cylinders and tested compression. Two at 90psi and two at 120 psi. They seemed to hold the pressure. Engine pulls through fine. I know there might be someting cracked and I will find that out if I can get it running. Someone rip the band aid off and give me my odds to set my mind at ease. Why would they design and engine without a tell-tale stream??? Fingers crossed.

It sounds like a few cylinders are scored to me. You can put it back together and see if it runs and just run as is. Or you can rebuild it as you see fit.

Old motors didn't have a telltale at least the OMC ones. They sprayed out the exhaust is all you see. But in reality if it was peeing at idle that's all you would see. Your not staring at your engine as your running all over so it could happen even with a telltale. That's why so many guys say a new quality impellor every year. On my pontoon the only time I can see my engine is when I'm peeking over the sundeck at it or it's ideling at the dock and I'm standing on the dock. I have no clue if my engine is peeing while I'm running it. I just hope to have a slow degraded water stream that I would notice and not a catastrophic failure cause I wouldn't see it, and hopefully my overheat alarm would warn me soon enough.

As your temperature raises to dangerous levels you should notice a difference in performance.

Sorry----In 66 the general public understood that you had to change impellers / visit the dealer.-----And yes there is very clear indicator for water pump function.----Many folks today are only able to push a button and wait for engine to start / run for them.

Those old V4s dumped Water out the Idle Relief when running

Don't be like that dummy and grab plug wires without insulation on you hands and/or plyers

Like its smaller sister motors, that 75hp will shoot a stream out five or six feet after the t.stats open. If I'm particularly paranoid about a motor, I like a simple temp gauge that takes a reading from a sender on top of the head after impeller replacement. The gauges are a little hard to find these days, but they are out there.

If the two @90 are in the same side you may have blown the head gasket or warped the head. I would pull the head and see what you find.

I believe they were on the same side. Ugh.

I agree, I guess the only insurance back then was an impeller replacement every year, etc. and now for that matter. I shoulder all the blame. It was a fantastic ride for about 5 minutes and then I got this cold feeling when I popped the cover to do a quick check. By then it was too late.

Yes, if I end up reviving this think with a rebuild or I luck out with no damage, I would love to put some kind of Tstat on it.
