look in this area, port side, on tha block half.. that's tha timing arm in tha picture.. tha date (06 28 90 on this one ) is stamped at tha base of number two cylinder.. some are a lot harder ta read but its there... tha clamp and trim is at least '84 or newer.....

also on top of tha block behind tha flywheel you will see a welsh plug (looks like a freeze plug) that might have a serial number stamped in it...

Well, the Cowl is from either 84 or 85, the only two years that had Brown in the Decal. However, the 84 had a different Transom Bracket, so that would narrow it down to 1985

I’m going for it being an ‘87. Looks like an extra long shaft too.
But all that said…it’s confusing me to be honest. I’m also going to suggest that the hood may not be original if it’s a 200…as far as I’m aware or seen…the 200 models have vents on the upper hood casing at each side. The smaller 2.0 150 models and similar don’t. Usually most of the 2.5 litres have the vents I’d think.

This is from the 1985 Brouchure, the V6s of the day, no vents, or Louvers on the Cowls, except on the XR2, and they were in front of the Brown stripes. The 25" shaft was available in 1985

Is that not the older brown decal model ? This one looks like the newer late 80’s red and white decal ?

If that bottom stripe of the decal used to be green…it’s from the early 90’s. 92-94 or not far off. Hard to tell. But I still think the 200 2.5l should have the vents on the top at each side. Only the 2.0 engines didn’t I’m sure.

tha only clam shell's that had vents were tha XR2 (maybe, don't remember for sure?) and XR4 which continued with tha XR4 drop ons.. all others were blank... last year of tha clam shell was '88... that style trim/clamp came out in '84...... but if you look at tha tiller arm it may be a little newer than '84/'85.. jus hard ta tell for sure??.... looks like it may have tha two front screw boss'es???

Not sure that’s true. Look at the pictures above or most other pictures of a 200 black max. Any I’ve known has the vents on them. Certainly late 80’s into the 90’s. I have at least half a dozen friends with such a thing and had a 89 200 with it years ago too.

Okay I can see them when I lighten the image, and they are on the OPs pic, so I was Wro....., er Mistaken

However I will stand on the Cowl/clam shell being an 85 as the top stripe still shows that ugly brown that was only used in 84 and 85

like i said they ended in 1988 so yeah, they were available in tha 80's!.. tha drop on came in 1989.. tha only louvered/vented clam shell was XR2 (one piece stamped metal, looked like louvers.. doesn't show on parts list) XR4 was glass and an assembly of sorts.. look at your parts list for any of 'em they will show ya whats what.... 150, 175, 200... 2.0, 2.4, 2.5's.
