Engine Doesn't Turn Over

I?ve got a 1997 Bayliner Capri with a 5.7 Mercruiser engine. It was having some hard starts and when I was giving it a tune up, I noticed missing teeth on the flywheel. So I pulled the engine and changed the flywheel out. It also has new plugs and wires, and new ignition coil. I haven?t changed the distributor cap because it looked okay.

My issue is that the engine isn?t turning over. I?m seeing movement on the engine belts though. I?ve checked and there?s fuel being injected into the carburetor, and I?m getting the proper power levels from the starter and alternator.

I suspect that I need to change the distributor cap, or I have fuel that is bad or compromised. I?m seeking some advice for troubleshooting this issue. Please let me know if I?m not seeing an avenue that I could take prior to having to call a boat mechanic.

My second issue is regarding the trim. Initially, I wasn?t getting any power to the trim and found that I had a bad fuse. So I changed the fuse out and changed out the old trim fluid for new fluid. Now I am able to trailer the prop by using the trailer button. But, using just the ?up and down? switch on the throttle I am only able to lower the prop, but can?t raise it back up from the throttle switch. If anyone can give any troubleshooting suggestions and/or a diagram of trim connections (to double check I reconnected it properly) I would greatly appreciate it!

The engine may be hydrolocked, Pull the spark plugs out checking for water then see if it will crank over. If it still won't turn over, pull the stern drive and see if it will crank over.

Good luck.

Remove the plugs and see if it cranks. Check how the starter engages the flywheel. It may be jamming and not able to turn the motor.
You can also try to turn the motor from the crankshaft to be sure it isn't stuck.
As far as the other thing.
Your trim limit switch is probably adjusted wrong.
Once it is set correctly it keeps you from over trimming. But when it's set wrong, there is no up action.

hard starts and missing flywheel teeth indicates a hydrolocking problem. Pull plugs and now try to turn motor over. If water comes out pull manifolds and risers and start motor to dry everything ,then refog motor to protect it untill you get new manifolds and risers.

Re: Engine Doesn't Turn Over

Thanks for all the info. I found out that I did have some water in the engine how can I ensure that it's dry before I put some oil back into it?

Find out where the waters coming from.
rotted thru intake manifold under the thermostst
manifolds and/or risers have a crack or rotted hole.cracked block from poor winterizing.

Also look for rain water getting in through carburetor by way of leaking down passed flame arrestor cover stud due to using a bad or incorrect nut designed to help hold water out.

Merc part number 11-826709109 superseded from 11-35045 if needed.
