Delco Voyager Distributor EST

I have a 1987 Bayiner Contessa, third owner. It was repowered in 1998, has a 300 HP 350CI with 9.1:1 compression. Timing spec is 10 degrees BTC. The distributor is a Delco part #10457092, based on documentation that came with the boat. It is an EST type. There are two plug connectors on the distributor. On the left is a 2-wire plug that connect to coil. On the right there is connector designed for 4 wires, but no wires going connected to it. The 4 openings for wires are sealed, looks like it came that way There is only one pin on the connector, second from the left. To set initial timing, do I need to use an "Initial Timing Connector"? What maximum advance should I expect to see with this setup? Should I consider installing a new Delco EST distributor upgrade kit for about $320 (Cap and rotor have been replaced)?
Any help would be appreciated.

What outdrive are you running on your boat? I would assume it would have to be a Volvo since either a Mercruiser or an OMC would have required wiring to the 4 pin terminal for the shift interrupt system.
Here is some information used by Volvo on their EST distributors.

Here are the EST timing specs for Volvo's 2001 through 2006 engines.

The outdrive is OMC Cobra. There is a working shift interrupt system.

There is one grey, one blue wire going to a connector to the shift interrupt switches. Out of this plug there are four wires, two to each of the switches.

Between the carburetor and the distributor there is a "black box" with three wires. The black one goes to a ground connection, blue connects to alternator, a grey wire splits and goes to 12V side of coil and look like it goes to the shift interruptor. Wiring harness is wrapped in electrical tape so I am not sure if blue wire also splits and goes to shift interruptor. If necessary, I can unwrap to make sure.

There are two wires (red and purple) with pin connectors that come out of the harness below the coil that are not connected to anything. The red is 12V when I turn ignition key on, the purple is ground.

Is the black box just for the shift interruptor? Looking at an internet photo of the components of a GM Delco Voyager EST marine distributor kit, there is nothing that looks like the black box, nor is it mentioned in the list of components.

You are probably referring to your ESA module.
Best thing you could do right now is post a picture that shows the distriburor and the black box. I am sure it can all be identified and explained.

sounds like you have a basic Delco voyager dist. it is timed with a timing connector plug that goes in the 4 prong plug. just pull out the sealing plug, plug in the timing plug, start the motor and put 12v+ to the long black wire. this will disable the advance so the initial can be set

like DonS asked.
we now need pictures.
the EST was never used with OMC and their ESA module.
however we wire them like mercs several times a year when repowering.
the EST is a good system and it doesnt use the old ESA module.
if a backyadigan tries this all bets are off.

Re: Delco Voyager Distributor EST

OK, I have a somewhat releated question about the Delco EST Distributer. The kit I have does not have a very good discription of how to hook the OMC Cobra ESA module up. (5.7 GM V-8 with a Cobra Drive)

If I understand an earlier post, the green/white wire from terminal b on the distributer 4 wire connector (EST Bypas per GM Sevice Info.) is supposed to be hooked to one side of the NO (normally open) shift interupt switch and the other side of the switch to the purple (12+) wire. Does this mean I can eliminate the overstroke switch from the circuit along with the ESA module itself?

This termnial b on the distributer is the same wire that we apply 12+ to during the timing setting procedure so my question is, does applying the 12+ via the shift interuper switch make the dist. module go into EST bypass and lower the engine RPM so we can get the drive to shift out of gear?

That is the way I am understanding the system and I hope I have it correct. As I said the instructions are not real clear and I don't want to hack this thing up and if by making it work like a Mercrusier and eliminate the ESA module and it will work OK them I'm all for it.

Thanks for the help.
