Engine dies when I put it in gear

Hello. I am totally new to boating, although I do have friends that have been helping me. I have a '79 Evinrude 100 on a Glastron ssv169. I do not have a good history on engine. Last tags on boat were 2009 so it has not been used much lately.
I have put in new fuel pump, cleaned plugs, 1 had a little burn others were fine. Put in new fuel(16 gal) with 2 cans of seafoam. Starts ok, not great, and i can drop throttle bar so I can idle. The idle is around 2000. Boat is in lake, on a lift.
I ran engine yesterday for an hour at 3500 rpm to clean out any gunk. Got rpms up to 6000, running ok now, but, when I put it in gear it dies. Ran it around 2 days ago and to launch I had to lower throttle bar and put into gear and throttle to keep it from dying. engine will not run at idle under load even though idle is set at 2000 rpm. Any thoughts?

The fuel passages in the carbs are pluged or varnished and will need to be rebuilt and cleaned good. The low speed idle settings might need to be set again, also as the motor is starving some for fuel when you give it throtal from what you describe. Sea Foam is good for keeping things cleaned up , but is not a sure fix for cleanning dirt particals out of the carbs and a fuel filter put in the fuel hose will help keep them from getting to the motor. Re: Engine dies when I put it in gear

From your description, it could be either fuel or spark. Your engine will seem to run fine on the trailer on 2 or 3 cyls. Once you get it floating on the water and shift into forward, you need all 4 cyls firing. Check for spark once it's running. Make sure you have solid spark on all 4 plugwires. That engine has two identical power packs-each of which controls the spark to one head. The engine idles with the carb butterflys closed. At idle, the carb draws fuel through some very small dedicated idle passages in the upper carb body. Not unusual at all for them to get clogged/restricted with dried fuel over the years. If this is the problem, you'll have to pull the carbs down and use some type of carb cleaner (like a Gumout type product) in order to open these passages back up. If you open the carb butterflys even slightly, (2000 rpms) the engine will draw fuel from the high speed jets and may seem to run better. Idle should be set to 650-750 rpm's, set when floating in the water in forward gear.

You are correct sir. When I first started this post, I was directed to other like threads so I read them. I bought a spark tester and had a dead cyl. After a closer inspection I found the wires on the pp were broken. There is an insulator of some sort. Wires were broken on each end. I could not find the right replacement model on I boats. They are either single or six packs. You wouldn't have a part # by chance would you? Thank you for your help, I can't wait to see what idle does under load. I thought I was running awful high.

The original power pack 581805 supercedes to 582125. See your local Bombardier dealer. You can swap these identical power packs for testing purposes. If a problem with spark moves from one head to the other when you swap the packs, that tells you which pack is bad.

Dern random ? This is my 2nd time typing this. After seeing the pp pic I noticed that they were plugs on the end. In my case the wires were frayed so I just bypassed it, got good spark, and all is better. I can only get 4200 rpm now, but that is better than 3600. Next time out I will dally with the throttle cable and see what happens. Idle in gear is @800 so that is good.
A big thanks to all who helped, I am sure I will be back for more advice.
