It would be interesting to crank the engine over (ignition & fuel sys disabled) with the drive off looking thru the gimble bearing to see if the coupler spins true….
That's an interesting thought, maybe the coupler is off center..

Would it be that obvious that you would see it at crank speed?

wouldn't be tough to do.motor is still winterized so its gonna crank some and I can have wifey turn the key.....

I think you probably could see it, I know when the harmonic balancer slipped on my '98 Jeep 4.0 it was pretty obvious. As long as you have water hooked up you could run it at idle but the exhaust water would be shooting all over you trying to see the coupler thru the gimble bearing lol.
when the shop installed the engine did the use your old coupler, or a new one?
never had vibs in the past?
other thoughts...u joints, but I'd think if they were bad you'd also hear noise, and would have heard it before you swapped engines.

Pull plugs and it will spin much faster.

I would be focusing toward coupler, ignition components (seen too many of these bad out of the box, especially plugs / gap, to dismiss) or carb. Are ignition components OEM / name brand or generic from Amazon or ebay? Hard to tell

Could also put an old input shaft in the coupler, would probably be more noticeable.

Def gonna run it and see what I can see before installing drive.
I assume I can idle it without water going to it for a minute or two.
Should be obvious looking thru the gimbal.....I assume?? Charlie

If you can see thru the hole in the gimble housing it should be obvious. Keep in mind if you run it with the water on it will be exiting the gimble housing just below the bellows so you’re gonna get wet. Me, I’d just do it at cranking speed. Good enough to see if there’s a wobble. Just disable the ignition sys so it doesn’t start.

I see your drive is an Alpha. Since raw water pump is in drive, can run for a very sort period with drive off.

If it was a Bravo, the pump would be on engine and a few seconds the pump will burn up the impeller with no water supplied.

I would venture to say that the coupler that was on the motor in the boat yard stayed on the motor when it was placed in the boat and it possibly wasn't any good

The motor prior to my purchasing it was a Bravo setup as I was told.
The boatyard said that they would swap the coupler from my bad motor which I am certain had a good coupler.Charlie
