Electronics Questions - apologies is I use the wrong terminology:

My 18 foot boat is from 2007 with a Honda bf20d 20 hp motor. The electronics are under the steering wheel/cockpit(?), and it’s very cramped and hard to access.

I frequently have blown fuses and failed circuits. My questions concern doing direct cables to the two that frequently fail: the Huminbird Helix 7 fish finder and the live well pump.

If I string cables to these and put the appropriate amp fuses (blade style) into inline fuse holders, will this be okay? I did it for the anchor winding gadget a few years ago with no problems. I’m just not sure if they have to be run through the electrical circuit panel where all the other fuses for lights and so on reside.

Thanks!!

What I did was to put a lawn tractor battery under the helm to power my stereo and Hummingbird. And direct wire them.

You will have no problem executing your plan. Both my chartplotters are wired directly to the house battery

Question remains, why is the Helix blowing fuses?

Helix 7 requires a 3 amp fuse.

I would want to know why the fuses are blowing. You have an issue. Can you see and trace the wiring to check for bad connections, burnt insulation or other problems?
