friend has old merc shifter control box, i have a 60hp johnson hydro-electric drive shifter control box on my boat now. question is can i use the mercury electric shift switch in a johnson or does the mercury not have one?

To my knowledge, Mercury never had an electric shift. That was an OMC thing, Johnson and Evinrude.

Furthermore, there are several switches. The Hydro-Electric is different than the Electra-Matic. And the Evinrude versions are different than the Johnson, Evinrude being push buttons. But you can use an Evinrude control on your Johnson.
