Re: Economy picking up!!!

I do feel somewhat for the recent college grads in thinking their degree is a ticket to automatic success when they started and see the economy nationally fall apart over their 4 years. Back in the day, we had our jobs locked in before we graduated from college and it was a matter of which offer you'd accept.

I have mixed feelings on the whole "occupy" movement but one quote I heard from a participant was "Our whole lives they told us to go to college and work hard so we don't end up working at McDonald's for the rest of our lives. Now they're saying "what, you're too good to work at McDonald's?" I can kinda see their point.

Anyway, I would say the economy in my TOWN is crap. The overall tri-city area isn't too bad though I don't think. Unfortunately lots of stuff used to be manufactured in York, PA.....now, not so much.

Re: Economy picking up!!!

economy here in Newfoundland is booming thanks to the oil industry......our small province of 500,000 people actually had a surplus of $750 million dollars even after giving the public servants a 23% pay raise over the last 4 years .....our legislated minimum wage is $10. per hour and the service industries can`t get people to work and are bringing in people from other countries even. We have a lot of skilled migrant workers who commute to camps in Alberta Oil country but still reside and spend their cash here !....it`s not all rosie living here though...you gotta love winter recreation !

The truck stops are packed full, at night, any more. They looked like ghost towns, a couple of years ago.

Boeing announced that they are shutting operations down in Wichita, ks... we are supposed to the air capital of the world. Well we used to be I guess. I don't work there, I am at Cessna... and we are back to hiring a few people.

My Brother works for a company, that builds personal luxury jets.

Their orders tanked in 08', but are booming now.

In close to 40 years of watching and working with the RV industry in N.Indiana, I can tell when good times and bad times are coming. 6 months to a year before a major economic change happens you will see it in lay offs and plant closings or plant expansion and new hires. Recently I have seen several announcments of plant expansion and new hiring.Better times are ahead.

Re: Economy picking up!!!

Just my take but I think housing / land values have self adjusted back to what they should have been before the bubble formed. I think the old "buy as much house as you possibly can because it will only go up in value" was doomed to bite people in the backside at some point.

This is unfortunately an idea lost on a lot of Canadians...however I agree with you. Real Estate in Canada has gone through the roof and into the stratosphere in the last 15 years and a lot of people still think its the best investment out there. However, I'm not one of them.
Needless to say the worst perpetrators out there are (surprise)...the realtors.
In Vancouver the average cost of a house is something over $750,000 and higher in some places. Here in Victoria its something like $500,000+ and our assessment has this house at over $600k....which, I think is ridiculous.
In my opinion there is no way that wages can substantiate this forever or for much longer. As for where the people buying this stuff are getting the money.....who knows? Canada's banks have always had tighter restrictions and requirements on mortgage loans so I think a lot of people must be getting a lot of help to come up with 10-25% down payments on those kinds of sell prices.
My two bits.

Ok, what in the world do you do with a 5200 sq' house?

I can't imagine. Or did you mean a 5200 sq' BOAT house :D

Bubba, Nestle' sure seems to be cash flush, and continues to pour money into our plant in all areas (except my payrate).

I hope they treat you well.

It's actually 5200 sq ft of living space with a lot more to expand into if we wanted to spend the money. We have two kids so every inch is appreciated. What I really need it more garage space for all of the toys, boats and trailers.

I'm sort of an Anti Occupy movement person. In my travels I saw several of the camps just out of coincidence. To me if I can ignore that the ones I saw were low life's, they are just displacing blame for bad choices and masking their envy. Nobody said life was fair and as a matter of fact it isn't supposed to be fair. Either do something about it or accept it but quit complaining. I was very envious of the wealthy people I saw and used it to propel me to be like them not to want to steal their stuff. I recall when I was just 20 in college and had just bought my first house, and I'd go to the parade of homes, big beautiful houses and it would help me want to keep pushing forward to get there. I think to myself my kids are going to have a rude awakening when they discover how hard it was to get to the point to live how we live. especially in 16 years when they get out of college and the current national debt comes due. Even by itself, our 9 year now nine year old boat is a hard thing to acqire. Think of everything you have to already have taken care of to get to the point of saying ok now I will write a large check for something I can barely use in MN.

I see this too.

the odd thing is, all summer 2011, though, I see new RVs being build and delivered and hundreds sitting on huge retailer lots.

I just don't really see them much, being pulled (or driven) down the road, by those whio would buy them. Most campgrounds looked pretty thin this summer, some of which went out of business.

I just can't figure who is buying them, especially at the lower-cost end. The luxery coaches selling are a given.

I have been to 8 or 10 dealers this fall and every one of them has packed the lot full to capacity, to the point of parking them in fields and blocking the driveways.

I don't get it.

Typically the trade-show industry (the one I'm in) leads both in, and out of recessions. Marketing budgets are the easiest and fastest to tamper with sometimes. We felt about a 30% blow in our market, while the industry felt nearly a 50% chop nationwide. 2011 seemed in the back half to come out of that. We wound up having a record year locally, while the nation hasn't quite recovered in this industry.
