Been a great week for me, landed two contract jobs I've been working on for the last year. (Nestle's and General Foods plants) In both cases the companies said they are getting ready to ramp up again. Good to see some signs of life in manufacturing!!!

it seems to be picking up around here too im a plumber whos laid off right now but we have a ton of work for the spring. 3M is adding a huge addition to their plant, there is a lot of work breaking but its still no where near where it was when i first started in 2005. sorry about your luck about nestle's lol ive done a lot of work at the one in clinton iowa. that one is a nestle purina dog food factory though. nothing like sitting on top of a dog food dryer thats 140 degrees when its 100 degrees outside.....

Information Technology, has been doing better than most through this entire downturn. As a headhunter, I can be thankful that I have been working through the entire downswing. To anyone thinking about new careers, this is one I just dont see slowing down, if your any good at it. Glad things are picking up in other areas too.

Kitchen & Bath industry has been looking up on the west coast as well. We ended 2011 up about 30% over 2010....but that's after taking an 80% downturn at our lowest year, 2009 from our high in 2007.

Steady is the key word for us. Our saying for the last 3 years in our industry has been "the only steady thing has been instability"

Haha this is ironic, Nestle is picking up for you, and we just got dumped by them. Although I am in online digital marketing, the $$ needs to flow somewhere. Glad it's flowing down south towards Bubba.

I am in IT as well, and throughout the recession my career has been constantly gaining traction. Sometimes you need to work a little harder to make oppurtunities happen, but it's always worth the return!

Re: Economy picking up!!!

It's interesting how state specific the economy is. In MN I have yet to encounter anything but a flourishing economy. We hear about it on the internet and obvously the national news shows but nobody I know has been affected much and we scratch our heads. The only thing I can point to is the lower house values but as I bought pre boom, I don't care. We have had our best two years ever for earning income. I just bought a third car/another newer 4x4 back-up tow vehicle and figured out that states like Ohio and a few others are in such bad shape, they could almost have an exchange rate when you cross the border. The car was 40% cheaper there than here in MN. I almost felt bad the deals are so good. If this was our worst ever recession, all I can say is come to MN where things never stopped humming relative to a lot of the country.

I'm glad to hear you got some work.

Re: Economy picking up!!!

Here in my area economy has good news and bad, some places expanding but not adding jobs just automaitng, others cuttingback still. Some sectors will never come back due to energy prices. I have not been laid off since 92 and could work 7 days a week if so desire. With school, wife, kids and hobbies i work about 50 hrs a week is all. Figure school will finish in summer so thenmay pick more time up but why? Use to work 72 hrs a week week after week. Iams is adding on, as is Steeltech keeping son in demand so life is good but he has been busy through the downturn. As for housing seen too many people buy houses to make money when it tanked they let the bank have them, I bought a house to live in, then one for a gettaway never to make money. So never cared what it did as gain or loose maney.

So..So... here.

MA has an ace in the hole when it comes to tech jobs (lot's of smarty pants graduating from the high level colleges), but manufacturing jobs are down.

Re: Economy picking up!!!

This time last week gas was 2.98 a gallon here. Right now its 3.25 for the cheap stuff. That's a 27 cent a gallon increase in 7 days.

That will tear the economy apart in a hurry. It's funny, it took 3 months for it to come down 25 cents, but it took 7 days for it to go back up.

Re: Economy picking up!!!

The only thing I can really point to is that they closed the St. Paul, Minnesota Ford plant that only made Ford Rangers which I can't believe they sell even one of. It had been slotted to close for a while however. As for the gas prices, I now have all V8 trucks that get driven daily so we will see how my deal with the devil goes if gas goes up to $5/gallon as I saw was suggested yesterday.
The thing that never seems to get reported is how low the unemployment rate is nationally for college educated folks. It isn't too terribly much above the natural rate of unemployment but that neve gets reported. Big numbers sell copy apparently.

A friend of mine graduated with a BS and MS in mechanical engineering from Cal Berekely last spring. Took him over 8 months to find a job.

I do feel somewhat for the recent college grads in thinking their degree is a ticket to automatic success when they started and see the economy nationally fall apart over their 4 years. Back in the day, we had our jobs locked in before we graduated from college and it was a matter of which offer you'd accept. I was annoyed that it took 3 1/2 years to buy our 5,200 square foot house from the time I graduated to save up $100,000 for a down payment. Seemed like way too long to get our move up house.

We have places here that just went from $2.98 to $3.15 overnight (yesterday) and the Fina stations are still at $2.88!

My brother graduated in the top of his class from UT Austin almost 2 years ago and is having to do sponsored mission work in Central America now so he can make some good contacts in the industry... He could hardly find free internships, much less paid ones. Nothing like graduating from University with lots of college debt and the promise of a $0 salary career for the next several years. Hopefully with perseverance his ramen noodles will become filet mignon eventually. He's worked hard enough for it already!

Boeing announced that they are shutting operations down in Wichita, ks... we are supposed to the air capital of the world. Well we used to be I guess. I don't work there, I am at Cessna... and we are back to hiring a few people.

Re: Economy picking up!!!

Its best to never think of our econ like it was...It will not be the same for years and years. But to that this is a time of a huge power struggle and i do mean huge..tink civil war huge. Place close attention to both sides of the debate. And then no matter what party you are from take the time as a Human first...American second to scruntize your city and freinds..Do you see vibrancy and hope.

Ok, what in the world do you do with a 5200 sq' house?

I can't imagine. Or did you mean a 5200 sq' BOAT house :D

Bubba, Nestle' sure seems to be cash flush, and continues to pour money into our plant in all areas (except my payrate).

I hope they treat you well.
