I have noticed that some people on here ditch Ebay one minute then suggest it the next. My personal experience with ebay has been pretty good. I have had a few problems but always with low priced items. All my big purchases have been great. I think the biggest factor is checking out your seller and seeing what others have said about them.. Thats what the feedback is for... But really guys keep buying your motors elsewhere,,, keeps the bid price low for me, :) )

Re: Ebay

I agree about e-bay - mostly.

My experience is that MOST of the folks are pretty honest in their descriptions and willing to answer any questions. But, like 1bigdog1 says, check out the seller.

Also, e-bay is like the warehouse joints. Not everything is a bargin. Currently on e-bay is a prop nut for a 1972 Evinrude with an opening bid of $9.??. I bought a new one at a local OMC dealer this afternoon for $6.50. The point is, it helps to know what something is worth before you jump in. To paraphrase a popular saying - be careful what you bid on, you might just get it.

Still, e-bay is a better place to sell someting than to buy something.

Like the state lottery - it's good entertainment.

bigdog,

My ebay experiences have been mostly good. My sons have sold alot through ebay.

I have found that the "Buy it Now" feature is the best way to buy something. Otherwise prices tend to get inflated in the bid process.

I have had two "big ticket" items (boats)that I was bidding on "pulled" at the last minute because the seller didn't like the way the bidding was going.

That is bad form.

Re: Ebay

If you know EXACTLY what you are buying and what it is going for on the open market, then you can get some pretty good deals on ebay. Example; bought 6 Coleman mantles for my propane lamp. Cheapest retail price was $3.26 for 2, got it off ebay for $8 delivered to my door.
Only thing about ebay is it takes time and the rates are going up constantly. Soon, everything online sold will be taxed so auctions will go away when that happens.

E-Bay is a DANGEROUS place! I spend WAY too much money there!

I haven't had any problems with E-Bay. You get an occasional flake now and again, but past that they are great.

I buy and sell constantly on there. In fact, E-Bay has funded most of my boat project. Kinda nice, and all tax free!

Check your buyer and seller. Their feedback is you best defense.

I also check the price of other on-line vendors before I bid on anything. I also check local prices. If I can get the item the same price (after shipping) downtown, then why wait?

I agree that there are some things on E-Bay that they try to gouge you on, but be smart and shop around. You have the whole internet to shop. Make the best of it.

H.

DMessy...

I have to disagree with you.

If the government steps in and starts taxing, I believe the internet would fall.

I for one, will STOP buying on the internet if that happens. How many people will do the same?
Thousands I would guess, and the market would fall.

The internet as you know if a multi-million (billion?) dollar industry, and I know the government is dying to get their taxes into it.

I have a three-fingered salute for your taxes Uncle Sam!

H.

Have had good & CRAPPY experiences on e-bay... the thing to remember is BUYER - BEWARE... If it sounds too good to be true it probably is...

Check out my thoughts on buying from venues such as e-bay, in my response to your question on the OB motors forum...

Good Luck, Obiwan Jeeper

Well, you got two sides of ebay, buying and selling.
As long as the seller has a good record, it's great.
But selling something on ebay can quickly turn into a nightmare of AOL proportions!
Just my own experiances with them.

Re: Ebay

Wow guys, I've done over 300 buy/sell transactions on ebay and never got ripped off. Worst I had was a few non-paying bidders, they are now ebay history, I have no problem filing a complaint and posting negative feedback. When it comes to money (especially mine) I have no sense of humor. I got bit by one clown who listed a radio as mint with a reserve which wasn't met, I made an off ebay offer, sent the payment, received a piece of crap, he refused to make good and figured he was safe with me in NY and he in Va, well, I have an old school buddy in his home town who looked him up and paid a visit, :( I don't think what I lost would start to cover the dental work, like I said no sense of humor.

Re: Ebay

I do sell a lot on Ebay, I started using it since 1996 when they were just a small computer and 2 people, called at that time AuctionWeb.
The most important thing is to represent what you are selling correctly.
I have almost 1300 feedbacks in 7 years, almost 300 from repeat customers, 10 negatives which result from buyers not paying attention to description and bidding at last second thinking "to beat everybody" and get the good deal. I sold some motors, and I don't like to do it much anymore, they bring too much money if they are "unknown" and people gets carried away with them and cries later, even if specified as "unknown" conditions (which I really mean and state reason for it). My worst nightmare was a '70s Mercury 10hp which was sold without being tested, I started auction at $ 100 with buy it now at $ 150. Bids started to fall in like crazy, I added a note that motor was UNTESTED-BEWARE, motor sold for $ 450.00, customer was complaining it had problems with coils and stator.

It's an online auction, and like all auctions everything is sold as is, very important is to realize there is no visual inspection, so you have to rely to seller description.

On the other side, just like everything else, few bad apples will spoil the whole tree. You hear about BAD things, but very seldom about good ones.

If you mention bad sellers, I can tell you about bad buyers (many), I do have a long list, but I don't complaint, I know few will always be there, but mostly people is honest.
In 7 years of buy/sell on it, I NEVER, EVER got ripped off (and never ever ripped off people too), I just pay attention.

Take your time, shop around, check prices, and most important ask questions, any seller with good intentions will be willing to go extra mile to get customer happy, especially ones that have a business selling, they want customers happy.

Val

Re: Ebay

There are a few that are predators. They word descriptions very craftily, and let you think you are getting something better than you are. Case in point, there is a seller that sells aluminum rain gutter covers and 2 nylon ties and represents them as "replacement aluminum grills for your" Ford Ranger (or other vehicle). He gets people bidding like crazy, usually young kids by the usernames they have, accepts money orders only. Have seen them sell for as high as $88. They cost him about $3 at Wallymart. He has over 50 negative complaints and ebay says he has not lied in his descriptions. I was not one of his victims, but ran across an outboard he was selling.

Be very careful and read everything twice for hidden meanings or inuendo.

My purchases have all gone smoothly because I am cautious do some research, and am not afraid to walk away from a "bargain".

Re: Ebay

Hi Homerr...
I've purchased stuff off ebay sold by dealers who already charge tax for instate sales. Just read in the local newspaper this week that some big dept. stores like Walmart/Target are already charging tax for online purchases. Sorry to say but, Uncle Sam sees an untapped market and he's going to get his cut. Keep your nose to the wind cause its coming... :(

Re: Ebay

ebay is like a big garage sale! the tax that isn't
being collected is mostly on the sell side. don't
think out of state residents will have to pay it,
but in state should and seller's are required to
collect. where they are really gonna get folks is
income tax. you could probably make a living going
to the salvation army, buying something for .25 &
selling to a guy in BFE for $5.00 plus a little
dig on "shipping/handling". I don't think that
these folks are claiming this income on their returns....
have gotten some good deals on ebay over the last
year and have bought about 50 items to date.
never been ripped. been disappointed and pleasantly
surprised on items. I know someone who bought a
"Furby" at a garage sale for $1.00 and sold it for
$20 on ebay
it's a good source for tackle, can get some items
like sticks, plugs, spinners etc. at a good price.
got 5 unused rapala's for $1.80ea and they were
the bigger 3 hook sticks that cost $5.00+ea.
only problem is what am I gonna do with the case
of 200 eagle claw 1/0 hooks I have? (oops!)
a little too big for my use.
maybe I'll re-list them on ebay?
like anything, it's what you make of it.
1)buyer beware
2)there's a sucker born every minute
just my .02
M.Y.

Re: Ebay

Can't add much to what has already been said.
Just read the description closely and check feedbacks.
If there is a negative it is for a reason.
I have bought some big ticket items from there, 1 truck and 2 boats, and my motorhome, and have been real lucky with all of them.
Just be careful.

All I was saying is that IF and WHEN Uncle Sam gets their fingers in... You'll see a mass exodus.

Kinda like trying to charge 'per download'

I'm outta here when or if it happens.

When they make you claim what you've earned on E-Bay...The doo doo will surely hit the fan!

H.

We just had some local people arrested for selling Palm Pilots on eBay that they didn't have. Sold quite a few before they caught up with them. I think they're the exception though, as most are legit.

Re: Ebay

I often sell on Ebay. What really bugs me are people who do not fully read descriptions. There have been a few people who did not read the descriptions and they overbid way too much on certain items. Then when they receive the item they blame me for not sending them something new or in perfect shape, even though every item was accurately described.
