What's wrong with winterizing the easy way? 5 gal. bucket sitting on swim platform with hose going to rabbit ears. Warm engine first with water, turn off . hook (garden hose) to rabbit ears . pour 4-5 gal. of anti-freeze into buckett and start engine 2-3 min untill green is exiting into a half berrel and extra catch pan. (you can use 50-50 if you want 6-7 gal) Turn off eng. Pour all left-over anti-freeze back into jugs for use in cars etc. Done it this way for years. no prob. :: P.Ss Connect hose to bottom side of buckett With fitting so gravity and water pump can do their job. 1/2 in.hose is fine.Keep buckett and hose for next year.Check solution mix if your real nervious about this method.

That's how I do it - I remove the thermostat and drain the block & manifolds before I do that though.

i don't see the part where you drained the water out of the cooling system....

That's how I do it - i remove the thermostat before I do that though.

by the time you guys do all this stuff. i'll have all the water fully drained (safe from freezing) from my cooling system and be moved on to another part of the winterizing process. + i don't have to contend with the mess (or cost) of dealing with anti freeze.

to coin a saying from bond-o, achris and others, air don't freeze.

Use the non-toxic pink RV anti-freeze so it doesn't kill the fish/animals.

Hemmm, lets see, removing all of them plugs envolves what? reaching stretching ,cant see half of them so feel is next .hanging over an engine isnt my morning exersizing ,oh" dont those plugs have to go back in at some point,(more time) OOHHH ! what if one of them plugs get dropped ,say down into the bottom of the motor well,where all that gunk and water and all sorts of stuff is. then a real fishing artist is born. Age has some advantages.

I winterize that way with a few twists. You will get lots of comments on the evils of winterizing, etc.

Disadvantages: improper purging of plain water from the cooling system so that anti-freeze inside the engine is diluted.
Possible solution: Go greater ( 7-8 gallons) on the antifreeze so that you get more purging of the plain water within the cooling system.

Twists that I add: I drain the exhaust manifolds and the engine block by removing hoses from the cooling system. Those are the components that may not have proper concentration of anti-freeze.

Any leftover anitfreeze would be good for the RV, but not the cars - I assume that you are using the 'non-toxic' kind of anti-freeze for the boat.

Do you fog your motor when you are using muffs?

For the record, It's pretty simple to drain the block. The post about finding plugs and not dropping them etc... made me laugh a little. It's not hard at all. I'm not flaming you, I just don't want inexperienced winterizers to be mislead into thinking that draining the block is at all difficult. In my opinion it is way simpler than using muffs.It's also way safer as far as preventing freeze damage is concerned (IMHO).

Just seeing the A/F come out the exaust is not a good indicator because water must always circulate to cool the rubber components.You never know if any got into the block should the therm close up.If you really want to do it this way you MUST drain everyuthing first.
I dont believe "fogging" can be done properly this way either. stall too soon and no A/F goes in.
Fog, Drain, Fill manually or Fog, Drain, Leave dry
Dry may produce scaling from the cast iron, wet dosent.Remove a few hoses and pour the A/F in.

I will just never understand what compels people to subscribe to this nonsense of introducing anti-freeze into non-closed cooling engines for the purpose of winterizing! Not to sound too much like an azz, but what is it about the saying, "air doesn't freeze" do folks not understand? These pic's show the results of a previous owner who did not winterize correctly. I am now rebuilding the engine. I hope those who are new to boating and this forum, will listen to those like Bond-O who have greater knowledge and experience, and save themselves the headaches. And one more thing, I am NOT an environmental wacko, but it does pi$$ me off when I think of someone firing up their boat in the Spring, and dumping all of that antifreeze into the water. Shame on anyone who does that! Rant over, and not meant to personally attack original poster.

Yep that 'easy way' will get you a cracked block if the thermo does not open all the way, if you don't want to fiddle with drain plugs, you have 2 choices, get an outboard next time, or an inboard with closed cooling (still have to drain the heat exchanger and raw water lines). Otherwise, do it the right way.
