I am looking for a driveshaft ( long ) on a Merc 500 - engine serial # C3244249

Mine is all pitted where sits the oil seal and I have water ingress in lower case.

If anyone has one on the shelf .... :'(

Thanks

Re: Drive shaft Merc 500

Mario, if it's not completely eaten away in the seal area, you might be able to press some Speedi-Sleeves over the damaged area and restore your driveshaft without having to take the lower unit apart.

The stainless wear sleeve taps down the shaft and sits right over the seal area to give a new wear surface for the seal to ride on. You'd typically seal it to the driveshaft with some Loctite or, if a lot of wear, even J-B Weld or Marine Tex.

Otherwise, if you know a real good machinist in your area, have him build the seal area up with stainless weld, turn it down to original size, and straighten the shaft.

Or try eBay for a shaft, there should be something on there you could use.

As a last alternative, a later model lower unit would have the stainless shaft or stainless seal area and would be much less likely to ever have pitting problems such as the old mild steel shafts do.

Re: Drive shaft Merc 500

Check with NAPA. I got mine from a local auto parts store (not one of the big chain stores) where they have numerous specialty parts catalogs.

You'll have to measure the driveshaft seal area to get the right size sleeve; vernier calipers will give a precise enough meaurement.

Here's some links to info on the Speedi-Sleeve and also another type called Redi-Sleeve. One is manuf. by Chicago Rawhide (CR) and the other by Federal Mogul/National/Timken.

Re: Drive shaft Merc 500

I had a 73 Merc 500 with the same problem...pitted driveshaft. My local Merc mech charged me about $50 to have the driveshaft built up then turned back down to correct diameter. Worth a shot if you can find a replacement shaft in better shape.
