Hi there. I am an Industrial Design student doing a project on future boat design. I was wondering if anyoune could answer some of these questions for me. Any reply would be much appreciated. I am interested in non-commercial recreational boats like fishing boats, wakeboarding boats and runabouts.

Q.) Are there any trends you have picked up on in the last twenty years? ie. In hull shape, composite and design?
A.)

Q.) What do you think influences these trends? ie. new materials, social change, trends. etc.

Q.) What do you think is a popular choice of boat and why?
A.)

Q.) What are common wishes for new boat buyers?
A.)

Q.) What do you think buyers want most in boats?
A.)

Q.) What would your preferences be for future recreational boats?
A.)

Q.) Where do you think boat design is going in the next ten years?
A.)

Q.) What technologies do you think will have an influence on boat design in the future?
A.)

Q.) Do you think the fuel crises will have an impact on boating? And do you think power source and driveline might change? – there is developments in biodiesel at the moment and investigations into steam jet power. All composite, no wood, no rot! They are not going to build wood boats anymore so keep the wood out of them, especially under the water line.

An inboard / outboard set up that does not need to be winterized. I may want to take a mid-winter cruise but can't!!!

Simple maintenance features. Boats should be built right and easy to maintain.

Hull designs should be built to accomodate choppy water, lakes are inendated with traffic, the pics always show a boat WOT on glass, they are dreaming.

Lot's of storage and built in compartments, nooks to place ropes and tie up lines, coolers etc. You should be ready to go without a lot of extras.

Most boat builders take too much for granted. Give us some innovations. Little has changed over the last 40 years, design wise.

Here's a step in the right direction:

http://www.z.askeladden.no/

Canvas top that opens like a car convertible top.
Tables that fold away.
Cleats that contain ropes wound up inside.
+++

Here's another:

http://www.mente-marine.com/ i.e. electronics that actively stabilize your ride.
