Hello everyone.

Let me start by saying thanks to all of you who are quite detailed in your descriptions on restoring or modifying a boat. A lot of what have read here has inspired me to start restoring a 14 ft Harbor Craft Aluminum boat which has seen better days.

The boat was given to me along with the trailer. All were in bad shape but I restored the trailer pretty well by grinding all of it down to the metal, priming and Tremclad the rest. I even added a Bow receptor, it didn't have one (imagine). Along with that I have an Evinrude 9.9 which I have yet to look at.

I am in the middle of painting the hull in which I ground everything down and priming it with Behr Oil Based Primer and Sealer, CIL Smart paint and then a clear coat, 2 layers each.

I am planning to deck out the boat with enough storage compartments for everything to be out of my way as I cruise along taking in the big fish. I have the plans drawn up to guide me to what I would like to do.

I do, however, have a question : How do I successfully install a good drainage system ? The transom has one support in the middle and not very efficient to direct the excess water into. I was thinking of a drainage system through every plywood flooring leading to a bilge pump which will be installed in the midst of the transom support but that doesn't sound like it's going to work.

Could you please advise me on this ?

I could add the plans to this thread if you wish to see them.

Re: Drainage on 14ft aluminum

Pushing Tin alot of members put a piece of PVC pipe down the center of the hull so it will drain from front to back .

On your paint if you havent started priming yet you need to put some Zinc Chromate on it before anything else this is a needed thing on Tin Cans . I got mine at Napa in spray cans about $8.00 a can but it goes a long ways as you basically just need a mist coat on the boat .

Oh yeaah and welcome to iboats :D.

Too late, already got the second coat on in color but I will remember that if I start swearing at the botched up paint job after a time. :)

PVC piping through the middle, huh ? Sounds good, thanks Rick.

And thank you for the welcome.
