I got it off Craigslist, someone in Hayward CA. His family has had it since 2005. Got a pinkslip and current registration for the boat and trailer. He said he had it in the water last year, that it needed some floor work, and some parts replaced that got stolen, carb and some smaller bits. I didn't notice the transom rework, looked factory to me... It doesn't show in the pics, but the transom work must have been done a fairly long time ago, not recent at all. He didn't mention the transom, he may have bought it that way. I only paid $400 for the boat and trailer.

I would start parting it out, get your $400 back and move on to a different boat.

I have not seen the whole boat but , in my opion it looks to me like you have a( RESTORATION PROJECT) on your hands. From my experieance it is better to start from scratch and not try to figure out what the guy before you did, you say you are new to boating and thats ok because the information that you can get from this site you will be able to build a ARC..... See how much $$$$ you want to put into it, and please get the mauales for boat and moter, it can be a fun hard learning experiance..... From what ive seen it looks like some ones measurements were off and the moter is a little low with a rubber sleeve to compinsate for leakage. This site will help you from the rooter to the tooter, you have to put in the time........

Having only paid $400 for the rig, I might not be quite so quick to throw the towel in. Not that I disagree with what's been said so far, and indeed if it's time to pull the plug - part the boat out and you'll make your money back EASY ...

Find a local marine fiberglass shop and have them look at it. Like someone mentioned, the Stringer doesn't rely completely on the transom for strength. If the stringers of the boat are solid and the transom is the way it's supposed to be it might be tough to tell from the photos. If you can spend less than $50 to get a pro's opinion that'll tell you if the hull is total junk. If it is, part it out.

If you can make a decent boat (replace the floor and sort out the drain plug) - keeping the boat SAFE as a primary concern - You could have an okay starter boat for a couple of seasons for under $2k.

Set an "I'm willing to risk it" budget and don't go a dime over it. Much past $150 to get some analysis and bits and pieces and you're spending too much. Much past $2k for a good working order boat and you've overdone it.

If you have reservation-one about the boat ... kill the project now and move on.

I am still evaluating, but this is what I have learned; The transom was repaired at some point and the bellows now covers the drain plug partially. This is not that bad as the weight of the motor and outboard is held by the stringers and not the transom. Other outboards like Mercruisers do rely on the transom. The motor and outboard are square and not off center, I measured everything.... the drain hole is off center so in the pic it looks like the outboard is off when it isn't. The motor is bolted down securely and I have plugged up the drain hole with a rubber plug. The next step is to get the engine running and evaluate... install a new tilt motor and evaluate the outdrive... oil ok, water in the oil, prop turns in both directions etc... If all of the checks out ok, I will evaluate the floor and stringers underneath. If still looks ok and repairable I will keep it and proceed. But if the motor has trouble, the outdrive is bad, I will probably get rid of it and find a better one! I am still learning as I go and thanks for all of the help! I think this boat still has a good chance of working out... I will post more when I learn more!!

allright Micael.

Trust me on the transom :get that thing fixed..Meaning a new transom.remember safety first.
Really.You may think its o.k the way it is but the whole transom could pull out while having a nice day out on the water..
It has happened before.

My advice would be to take your time if you really want to fix her,all here would love to help for sure,But we dont care much for quick fixes..
I also do understand you not wanting to part from her I really do but have you considered the costs? it will cost you a lot of money.
Also check out the boat first before getting a new motor,remember you cant put a new motor in before you fix your boat!
