Re: Drag the Skeg

Yup draged mine when I was hurried by other boaters to get out of the way on a busy single ramp and it happened with a brand new prop as well  The prop was dammaged as well as the skeg.

Re: Drag the Skeg

Twice again this sunday. Once at the garage and loading on to trailer at ramp. At the garage, when I start jacking the tongue up it gets really hard because skeg is hitting floor so I have to trim up some but I can't go all the way otherwise it will knock the brooms and stuff off the hangers. Got a couple of nice lines dug into the concrete on the drive way. So I need two stickers DON'T DRAG SKEG on the vehicle and boat dash. Previous boat I owned was impossible to do this, that ruined my thinking. Should relocate the broom, mop, etc. rack but its in a perfect location.

Have yet to do this, but it was always part of my post trip checklist in my head. I always pull it up onto the trailer myself, and the first thing I do is put it up. I have, however, started the engine a couple times with the drive still up.

Re: Drag the Skeg

I never had a problem on my old boat, 1973 tri-hull. It sat high enough on the trailer with 10" to spare. The first time I loaded my new to me 2006 Lowe fm 165 I felt the skeg of the merc 75 4 stroke hit the ramp just as I started to pull up. No damage a little paint couldn't fix. I added 'trim the outboard' to my check list.

Re: Drag the Skeg

I did once but it was pulling out of a gas station with my old man's boat. It looked like it was just going to miss but she barely scraped as I left the station. Where I launch my boat I have to trim it so I don't bounce off the bottom so its already up enough so it won't scrap.

yup, you name it I have hit it or draged on it, anyway I thought that was the purpose of the skeg to keep the bottom of your boat off the ground..ha!

Yep once learning about anti reverse lock on winch with first roller trailer , And again taking out low water at ramp and running trim alway up ,was enough before ? Use buttons on right at ramp ,might go look for piece I left . Almost as fun as having passenger asking if water is suppose to come out of cup holders and water at feet coming CC floor fast . Yep guilty of that one too . Found out what safty chains are for too.

Had an old evinrude fall down while towing (strap was applied by non-boating buddy). Ground the skeg down and polished the bottom real good. Prop was a write-off tho.

Re: Drag the Skeg

I had the Grandfather in law drag the skeg and the prop across some rocks under water once. Boy was he pissed, haha we were going thru this channel where we never went thru but always see charter boats going thru. Well I guess the charter boats knew enough to trim it because we didn't and it was only 2' deep.

Re: Drag the Skeg

Where I boat, we often drag the skeg while underway. Anyone with paint on the skeg has not been boating yet. So underwater doesn't count.

last weekend (in addition to underwater) I was moving the boat with the motor down, had to drive through a shallow swale, and the skeg cut through the turf like a lawn edger. No problem. I did once back it too far against a wooden curb and broke it off; had to get it welded back on.

Re: Drag the Skeg

Done it a couple times here myself.

1st was when i was having problems with the tilt motor itself it would not raise the motor thought i had clearance but nope i didnt, caught it as i was starting to pull out and bleed the system out then held it up as she pulled the boat up the ramp.

2nd time same day on the way home the transom saver fell off after a large bump i have never seen before on my road and before i could avoid it i hit the hole would be better to say, and the motor fell hard enough for 2 things to happen. The motor hit hard enough to push me through the stop sign also far enough to grind the nicks out of the skeg. Then i guess the boat gods werent done laughing at that one for it ripped the all ready weak transom off the back of the boat short a few feet at the bottom.

Lesson learned always double and triple check motor. Now i have a peice of pvc pipe that gets put inbetween the motor and tilt bracket to support if the transom saver should yet again fail me.

good reason not to use transom savers--although sounds like yours was beyond saving

Re: Drag the Skeg

Yes it was and i used it mainly due to the tilt having issues. Like a normal force it has the leak down problems. Nothing to major now that the pump has been replaced when the old one went out completly. Now the valve body is leaking down on me. Nothing bad but it wont hold up to the bouncing on the way home so i use the t.s. To save it from falling down anymore. Weird thing is it will hold up the motor with no bounce for a week or so then if i go out and mess with it the darn thing slowly drops. But i did learn the leason always check and double check.
