Was doing a plumbing job over the weekend and smashed my thumb in the process. Now no one likes something like that but for a guy that uses his hands and tools daily I HATE when I bang up my hands because I KNOW I'll manage to whack/bump/scrape it a half dozen more times before it heals. Right now my stupid thumb (its stupid, not me) is so sore I can't hardly grip anything and I look like a cub bear with mittens on when I try to use it. I can tell you one thing is for certain, no hammer is getting within 10' of that thumb for a couple weeks!!! :D

I'm just as guilty... and that's why God invented Mechanix gloves.... They don't protect from hammers very well but really help cut down on the scratches & rips in the skin.

I know your feeling. That said.... anybody that knows me or has met me can see the bumps, scrapes, scars on my head. I'm just glad I hardly ever use it!

Get well, Bubba.

Well, nobody enjoys getting hurt, seems like whenever I get in a big hurry to do something then my odds of getting hurt go right up....try to take my time and think about what I'm trying to do.
I replaced the 4 CV boots on my VW Buggy Saturday and wore those clear plastic gloves to keep that black molybdenum grease off, and it really worked great! Guess protective gear is a big help. Take care of that thumb, Bubba!

I always thought that when I was working on something, and there was no blood, I hadn't done the job correctly.

I know I'm a proud member of the busted knuckle garage for sure! The wife would agree that everytime I work on something I'll usually come back in with a shop towel wrapped around a finger or thumb with duct tape holding it on lol.

Yes I must admit I hate hurting my hands. They are big and don't fit in small places well, when I hurt them makes it hard to do my job at work, they are my bread, and butter. I have welded with glovers on doing lng welds burning them through the gloves, talk abouthurt, then there are the scrapes, cuts and bruises. I manage but yes takes longer to heal now than 20 years ago, so try to protect them, but they still get hurt.

Re: Don't you hate hurting your hands?

I smashed/crushed the very tip of my middle finger flat 25 years ago as I slipped in the mud throwing a clay covered 4' section of 4" hollow stem drilling auger onto the drill rig. I could not believe the pain that shot all the way to my shoulder like an electric shock. It hurt so bad I got tunnel vision and had to sit down on the ground before I fell down, and my stomach became queezy as I must have been going into shock for 5 10 mins. Im still sure it would have felt better if I had cut it off instead of crushing the tip of the bone. It is still sensitive to touch today. I hate when I realize Im about to hurt my hands when working on automobiles a nanosecond before I actually do it and not soon enough to stop me from doing it:facepalm: Does anyone else do this?

Re: Don't you hate hurting your hands?

When I got into the maintenance field 35 years ago, I don't think I have ever had a hand that was cut free. When one is just about healed up, I'd replace it with a new one. Then working with degreasers and coil cleaners really tends to cause major pain plus slows down the healing process.

It seems when I smash a finger or thumb, its not major until the whole nail turns a nice shade of black :D

BTW,,,did you ever just finish cutting or heating something with a torch and then bare handed reach down to pick it up without thinking that the dang thing is still friggen hot? !

What I hate most when getting cut is,,,,,,,,,,,,Bleeding all over everything!

Re: Don't you hate hurting your hands?

I always seem to get my knuckles on something and every time I have to get something outta my pocket it opens it right back up!
I cook a lot and usually grab a hot pan outta the oven without gloves without thinking at some point... too many irons (pans) in the fire, so to speak.
And Bubba, I hate plumbing jobs more than everything else combined! Glad an old buddy of mine works at his dad's plumbing company...

Re: Don't you hate hurting your hands?

There's been more than one occasion where I saw blood smeared around the shop and thought "uh-oh, somebody got hurt".

Then I look down and realize I'M the one bleeding everywhere.

The thing that bugs me the most though, is when I stop in the middle of doing something reckless with my hands to think "Oh geez, I should be careful, I could get hurt", and THEN smash my hand with something.
If I don't think about it, I usually get by alright. As soon as I stop to think, thats when the pain comes.

Thats why I try to use my brain as little as possible.

Same here--my wife knows when I'm working on something when she see's me heading for the peroxide and band aids.

Be extra alert around car doors!! Will really awaken the old hammer wound. Mommicked--- solder in a verticle coupling (copper sweat).
