check the hunting group forums. something like the duck guys or coon hunters. I would not trust many of the reviews on Amazon.

most are looking for dogs escaping their home (urban environments), not out wandering the woods. here is a list from PC magazine. https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-pet-trackers-and-gps-dog-collars

you will need true GPS tracking and you may need a subscription.

Glad you found the pups. Mine refuses to get off the couch so I have no worries.
I was thinking a hunting group or forum as well.
Probably be a good place to start anyway.
Best

The ones that use a gps collar with an hand held devise are $1000 plus! My brother has them for his dogs. I settled on one called "tracki" it does need cell phone coverage to work and a subscription but the devices were fairly cheap so I figured I'd give them a try and if they don't work I can cancel the subscription and am out less then $100. I'm still working on convincing my wife on the need for a kicker for my boat, so I don't dare tell her I also want $1500 or so for dog collars. They would need a tracking device to find my body!

If I spent $1500 on a tracking device for the dogs, they would be found with my body, probably implanted in a posterior orifice..... but one would see how well the trackers worked......

make sure they are chipped and for cheap you can get custom collars with their name and your phone on them.

I have the collars, thats how I got them, somebody phoned after they found them in their yard. I have trackers for them when I let them out in the woods so hopefully that will do the job!

good deal. I see soooo many facebook posts about lost or found dogs and while chips work that can be tough for some people to get to a vet to do that. phone call is way easier (and quicker).

Yes, you can go to a pet store and use the machine to make a tag with dogs name and a phone number, address as well. My dogs have them. I suspect that a lot of found dogs were dumped off, unfortunately.

Likely if you were going to dump a dog off you would be smart enough to take the tag off, but then again, maybe not!

Good to hear your pups are back. My son goes thru this with dogs that have roamed-off in the woods. If you're still looking I can find out what collars he got

Thanks, but I now have gps trackers that I attach whenever I take them out. They work pretty good. Look at my cell phone and I can tell where they have been within the last few minutes. Now if I could just get the pup to figure out WHY he is in the woods in the first place, as in chasing rabbits!

I remember dad saying the same thing 40 years ago behind our bird dogs.

Yeah it takes a lot of patience training a pup, but its worth it when they finally get the hang of it. My brother has 3 pups he is trying to get going after rabbits and he posted me a pic yesterday of three of them standing side by side in the wood looking at him wagging their tales, the caption read: "let the frustration, I mean training begin."
