I get thought of as an electronics "hook-up". I can't remember how many people ask me to get them a deal on a TV or Computer.......

More than once I've shown up to an important meeting wearing a t shirt and a hat...maybe a few days without shaving. They think I'm somebody's assistant. The look on their face is priceless when I say "Hi, I'm Ryan", and they realize I'm the owner of the company they were talking to on the phone. 8)

Ain't that the truth! :^

KB, thanks for the words, it seems it's one of those things that goes with the territory.......

I remember seeing this being used in a different way once years ago: was out for a drink with a friend of mine and the owner of the bar got talking to us. We'd casually noticed that the cigars he had behind the bar were duty-free. When he asked what we did for a living my friend instantly replied "Customs Officers" d:) Strangely enough we didn't pay for another drink all night and had free cigars too.........very naughty!

Tail_gunner, been there, done that. Don't you love the "friends" that come to you and say, "I just bought a ..... and paid ..... for it. Did I get a good deal?" HUH? You bought, didn't think of coming to me to ask for a price, and now you want me, who you didn't trust in the first place, to validate your purchase? Oh, by they way, I had the same car available and you could have gotten it for about $2,000 less if you had come to me and asked BEFORE you bought! :$:devil:8)

Hey --- We don't bite. But I understand. Fish fear us too. :)
Back in the day, when folks actually fixed TVs, they loved me and my days off, because I werked in my dad's TV shop nights.
And stan, I didn't know what you did for a living... Now I do. My opinion of you has changed. I now have far more respect and appreciation for you, even if you don't serve locally. You da man, Stan

Cheers 12footer, for a moment there when you said "my opinion of you has changed" I thought "oh no, I hope this isn't going downwards" d:)
Nice words and thoughts 12footer and much appreciated. I remember being told in training to remember that the abuse was aimed at the uniform, not at us personally. Just a pity the uniform can't answer back sometimes.

Thanks for the support, now about this TV fault I've got on one of portable TV's....................... 8)

This is an interesting topic. I started out my first career as a soldier. During the early years (Viet Nam era) soldiers were labeled as baby killers and rarely welcomed home in many communities. Grenada & Pamama Operations did not draw too much attention..... then came the 1st Gulf War......... hero's! :) We were welcomed back with open arms. Now, soldiers have a new respected place and alot of support.

Law enforcement is very close to being a soldier. You have a job to do and tend to either be dealing people that are in the wrong or people who are victims. Applauded as hero's when people feel "safer" because of your actions and then again...... people can be super critical when they are caught in the wrong.

When people find out I'm a professional Hit Man, our relationship changes completely. It goes from friendship and cook outs to "Here's the list. . . How much, how soon. . " . Strictly business. Happens every time.

I'm a carpenter/remodeling contractor.

I've given up on having any friends. They always want this and that fixed for cheap or free, but have little to offer me in return. They never understand that if what they need done will take more than 15 min. they're cutting into my income.

They would never take 6 hours off from their job during the week to do me a favor. Then they get pissed off when you tell them no more freebies.

Love it! 8)

Definitely one I must use in future just to see what happens.........................

I was in a cab a few months ago with one of the worst drivers I have ever sat with: going through red lights, speeding, aggressive behaviour. Then he asked me what my job was and for once I was delighted to be able to tell a stranger. After that the journey was more like sitting in a car with someone taking their driving test d:)

BobVT: totally agree with what you're saying about the way our boys are treated. In the UK the war in Iraq and Afghanistan has not been popular and the guys have been getting a rough time when they come home (part of my beat includes one of the biggest garrisons in the UK). They get a bit of special treatment from us, especially those that were in before them and know what it's like :'(
