I have an '91 bayliner capri 20' with a 4.3L merc/merc I/O. Does anyone have the manual for it? I have been trying to work on it but without a proper manual it is a nightmare!!! I bought the boat a few months ago from a guy who had just replaced the alternator, put new heads on it, and replaced the waterpump. Sounds to me like it overheated. It runs fine but my gimbal bearing is howling. I hear there may be a grease port for it but I dont know where it is. Also the fuel gauge and the oil pressure gauge works but not the tach, alternator, temp or horn. It looks like someone did some wire splicing but as a technician I do not tear into wire without a schematic. The speedo works kinda but the hose has fallen off at the outdrive so I am trying to figure out how to resecure that - purdy tight down there. The other problem that I am having is it sounds like it is pushing max rpm's, it has a 14 1/2" x 19 prop and I am doing a solid 35mph... it would seem a bit slow so I am windering if there is a rev limiter or something that may be slowing me down. I've seen some posts about adjusting the timing and it making a huge difference. And lastly... the belts. Currently I have 2 belts. 1 goes from the crank shaft to the altenator to the water pump and the other goes from the waterpump to the powersteering pump. I would think thats ok but in order to change the belt from the powersteering pump to the waterpump it requires removing the waterpump pulley as there is not enough clearance inbetween that and the cranck shaft pulley so something tells me thats an issue too. Beautiful boat, decent price... but a lot of work! Any advice, especially manuals would be WONDERFUL!!!
Thank you,
Jake

Welcome aboard...

Thats my favorite looking Bayliner. I owned 2 of them. 91 was the year of the big change with Mercruiser from the Alpha 1 to Alpha 1 Gen II. I have seen the 91's with both installed. I will just give you links for the engine and both types of drives. The wiring is color coded and pretty simple. Good luck...

Thank you very much!!! I have done a lot of searching on this boat and dont find much, primairly 80's and late 90's model. Its a good boat theres no doubt, I sold my '83 searay seville cuddy cabin w/a 2.5l merc to buy this, dont like the bow rise but I still need to install a hydrofoil to help, lost some storage, but what it made up for in performance and ride its worth it!!! heres a pic... I love to show it off :) any idea where I can get factory gauges incase mine are bad?

Just look on ebay for gauges. They are a dime a dozen. I have thrown away so many sets in junkers I buy and strip. I cant give them away. This is what I did with the last set I had...

Any tips on how to figure out if its a gen 1 or 2? I looked through both manuals and I didnt find anything related to serial numbers, I did notice though that the alpha 1 never mentions the gimble bearing, the grease zerk or the oil dip stick but the gen 2 does... but I would like to know for sure. The numbers on the drive are 184r and the s/n is 0D565184 but the transom shows 0d570355... also is it typical to have different numbers like this?

Alpheus, do you have a thread for that gauge setup?

gen2 has speedo pickup in the lower unit, and the lower to upper bolts have nuts external

I like the lines of the 91-on Capri too, but I'm biased... they really pioneered the "look" of runabouts for the next decade.

This Bayliner owner's manual is 1996, but the dash and helm wiring should be basically the same as yours... it matches my 1992 exact.

Pull the plastic caps on the trim cylinders. If it has nuts holding them on its an Alpha 1, if it has C-clips its an Alpha 1 gen II.

However I just looked up your serial number and you have a Gen II.

Both of my 91's had gen II's but you never know...

No. Just read the wiring diagram. Like I said, Mercruiser is all color coded and the diagram is real easy to follow...
