Vikings cruise was allegedly a sex party
David Chanen, Paul McEnroe and Kevin Seifert, Star Tribune

Minnesota Vikings players are being investigated in connection with a lake cruise that turned into a wild sex party last week on Lake Minnetonka. The party became so out of control that crew members on the two yachts were offered money for sex and feared for their safety, law enforcement authorities and an attorney for the cruise company said Tuesday.

Head coach Mike Tice told reporters today that he's not happy about the allegations, while refusing to comment or confirm any details.

"I fashion these young men as an extension of my family," Tice said. "So as a father and a family man, you can probably sense how I feel."

The accusations come on the heels of a two-day retreat in which a code of conduct was at the forefront, the team is "on the same page" when it comes to standards for player conduct. He said he had discussed the allegations with team owner Zygi Wilf this morning.

"Incidents like these can either blow a team apart or pull a team together. It's my job to pull the team together," Tice said. "Obviously, our job is to get ready for Chicago and allegations like these don't make it any simpler."

Tice also said he has struggled with disciplinary measures in the past. "There have been instances in the past where I feel like my hands have been tied by contracts or union guidelines," he said. But he reminded reporters that the allegations were as yet unproven.

Tice said nothing specific about how many players were involved in the cruise, or who they were.

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper also would not comment on the allegations today.

"If you're not going to ask me a question about the Chicago Bears, then don't ask," Culpepper told reporters at Winter Park. "Playing in the NFL is tough enough without any distractions."

The Vikings are tied with the Bears for second place in the NFC North. The teams play Sunday at Soldier Field.

The excursion Thursday on two yachts owned by Al & Alma's Supper Club and Charter Cruises in Mound was organized by first-year Vikings safety Fred Smoot and possibly two other players, according to Stephen Doyle, the company's attorney.

At least 17 Vikings players have been identified as being on the yachts, he said. It was unclear how many were involved in sex-related activities.

At least 90 people were on the two yachts. The boats were ordered to return to shore just 40 minutes into what had been planned as a 3½-hour cruise after supervisors learned of the alleged behavior.

The crew members, including one who was 18, were "petrified" for their safety, Doyle said.

"The behavior was terrible," he said. "Vikings were absolutely participating. This was not a passive event for them. It was outrageous."

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case, after the boat company notified authorities about the players' alleged behavior.

No arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed.

The incident took place during the team's bye week; the Vikings didn't play Sunday.

Late Tuesday, Vikings officials issued a statement: "The organization has been made aware of the allegations involving our players and we take these allegations very seriously. We are working diligently to gather as many facts as possible. At this time, we have no further comment."

Attempts to reach Smoot and his agent were unsuccessful.

Doyle said behavior on the cruise included oral sex, masturbation and playing with sex toys.

A source with direct knowledge of the case said Tuesday that accounts of Vikings players having public sex on at least one of the boats matched with what witnesses had reported.

The source said that it appeared that the sex acts took place between consenting adults and that no felony-level crimes had been committed. The source said that it was likely that misdemeanor charges involving lewd behavior could be filed against some players within a week.

What pointer just said....you can't be serious KIZ

I would think that part of being an NFL star is also being a proper role model. If I got paid as much as they do I doubt I would mind a few years of my life being under a microscope..........but maybe thats cuz I have morals and am not worried about stories like that being released.

You can't be serious Ken. Maybe if you sent a bunch of lifer convicts on a cruise would you expect them to act in such a manner.

Yes, I am serious.

I dont condone thier actions at all, but, this wasnt a company sponsored party, it was a private party.

And I am sick of sports figures being considered role models or heros.

Look for your football players to play football, and look to the morality leaders for morals. Dont confuse the two.

Ken

Re: Do these fools deserve an new stadium?

Well then they should have all male crew members.. :D ..What I said was sarcastic....Frankly, if you bring sex toys on board, then you are planning for that sort of thing, and speaks directly as to the moral fiber of those involved, and if you are planning such an outing then you should take care that everyone is a willing participant (read HOOKERS)before the boat leaves the dock....Just another example of pampered,over-privileged, over paid children acting disgracefully and being such, can do what ever to whom ever they like. Or aw least thinking they can.......JK

I agree with Ken. I am sick of these players being called 'Role models'. Some of the worst public behavior imaginable is displayed by these over paid 'Role Models'....Time for the youth of America to glorify something different, I hope... Gotta go, I'll continue my rant later....JK

What'ya expect from a group that couldn't pass the 6th grade? We've elavated these people that can't read or sign their own paychecks to some god like status. They've been coddled and protected from scrutinty since they could walk and we expect them to know how to behave? Frankly the attention span of people has degraded to them only caring for themselves and for the moment. Screw tomorrow.

Anybody puker fans remember James "stairwell BJ king" Lofton?

Re: Do these fools deserve an new stadium?

Ken they are considered role models not because they deserve to be or because they choose to be, but rather the simple fact that their job is always in the public spotlight. Thousands and thousands of kid watch them every Sunday, and will inevitably here about things they do off the field. They shouldn't have a free pass just because it wasnt team sponsered. that is irrelevent when you consider that no matter what they are in the position to influence the youngest of minds. it comes with the territory, and knowing that they need to be cautious of how they act. Its as simple as that, and I dont think its a big thing to ask of them.

JK- I figered it was sarcasm, just wasnt sure

Re: Do these fools deserve an new stadium?

Not role models or hero's. But they take the big bucks for the endorsement deals, money for hawking buicks in MN, a percentage of the revenue generated by the sales of their jersey's, run around wearing clothes from their sponsors or friends busnesses, who is one of the major corporate sponsors for the United Way, who demands (extorts) local tax dollars to build facilities to showcase their skills or threaten to move to the next ***** city, get paid for their appearances on local sports shows based on their celebrity subsidized by the taxpayers.

But hell, what's a little prostitution and public urination, and maybe even more to yet be revealed (drug use has been alledged but not yet reported), scareing the crap out of the near minimum wage staff, and who knows what disease could be spread based on this activity (see Mike Vick and hepititus A). But the team, city and fans have no interest in their activity. Come on Ken the fact you don't consider them role models is fine but the youth of america and millions of others do, and their actions have farther reaching affects than just the superficial legalities of the event.........

Tice is toast!
The Viqueens are not a factor this year.
Culpepper will go down as another Black quarterback who under acheived.

What do you expect from a team that took and put up with Randy Moss for so long.

BTW, Ken...

If everything was consensual, then you are right, it's none of our business. From the sound of it, I don't think that's the case.

I still say we really dont know the full story yet.

Maybe one of the participants saw dollar signs and decided they were offended.

Also, nowhere does it say that any of the players were involved.

I am NOT gonna defend their actions if this did happen, but I always hesitate to judge until all the facts are known.

Ken
