Do the rivets go under or on top of the vinyl floor covering ?

I removed all of the signboard wood that was installed in my 17' Kalmath boat by Mfg. The deeper I get into this boat the I more thankful that I bought a Kalmath. my second Kalmath...

I am replacing it with vinyl flooring, using a high quality adhesive. The old carpet had the rivets on the top. I have not used vinyl before but I am guessing the rivets also go on top. Am I correct in thinking that if I put the rivets under the flooring they will poke through the surface?

All advice greatly imprecated, thank you ;)

Yeah I don't think I'd put rivets under the vinyl.

Ditto. I'd probably put them on outside/through the vinyl. It will hold it down better and give it a bit of a dressed look, if you space the rivets nice and evenly. Good luck!

I used rivets through the vinyl on my resto:

Exposed fasteners are the best way to go IMO, if you ever need to disassemble your boat you can remove the fasteners without tearing up your finish. Just drill the old rivets out, disassmble, and then install new rivets.

Jigngrub that is one sweet job, the rivets blend well in the vinyl.

I need to build some hatch covers for my, would you happen to have detailed pic's of how yours are constructed ?

Great job:)

Great job:)

My hatch covers are aluminum from the factory install so I just covered them with the vinyl and added the angle trim.

Dam that looks good. You can be proud :D

Understanding your covers are mfg, I have the ability/resources to fabricate mine, my boat did not come/with. The question I am having with your hatch covers are the edges/frame made from angle iron and then sheeted (= two piece construction) or are they formed from a sheet and the edges are broke (= 0ne piece construction) from the pic’s it looks like it be both?

Also would it be possible to get a detailed close up pic of how the hatch covers nests/recesses in the surrounding deck.

Thanks for all your help. I just missed the PDX sportsman show where I could have checked out all the fishing boats

The covers are 1/8" aluminum with broke edges (one piece). I attached the angle to the edges with 3/16 dia. closed end blind (pop) rivets on about 4" centers. The trim angle is 1/8" thick by 3/4" aluminum I bought at Home Depot. The trim angle sets on the deck and covers the gap between the cover edges and the decking. I'll post some close up pics later.

btw, I cut the angle with my 12" miter saw with a 96 tooth bi-metal blade on it and used an metal type epoxy on the mitered joints if you're wondering.
