You're tapping the bellhousing, it doesn't make any difference if it's installed or not, it interferrs with the side of the bellhousing.

There is no such thing as a "Gimbal" there is a gimbal bearing, a gimbal ring, and a gimbal housing, but nothing is called a gimbal.
The part being tapped is called the bellhousing.

The picture Don is refering to is the link you put in your post #25.
Below the picture is a parts list with the description names for each part number. As Don stated, #1 is the Gimbal Housing.
Did you not study your own link before you placed it in your post?
