Do I need a shift cable replacement?

Hey everyone,

Started the boat yesterday and the engine stalled when trying to put it into forward and reverse, I was running on muffs and it has an alpha one, gen one stern drive and a 1999 5.7l Mercruiser engine. I did some research and they said this is normal and when I put it in the water it should work fine?? They said it didn't go into drive because there was no pressure on the prop? Also the stern drive will go up but not down via the side switch on the shifter, could this be related? I know the stern drive will go down if it's jumped.

"They" dont know what there talking about
If the interupter is working on land, either corrosion or bad cable is the cause. It only operates IN THE WATER, WITH A LOAD ON THE PROP.

jumped on, or jumping the solenoids?

Sorry i should have been more specific, it will go down when you jump the solenoids.

It will go in gear and the prop will spin, but then the engine stalls.

"It will go in gear and the prop will spin, but then the engine stalls." (On the muffs)

The link that Eric 3.7LX says this is normal, or am I missing something?

From Eric 3.7LX link

The system is NOT designed to work when putting the drive into gear, or when the boat is out of the water and on muffs. Without the load on the prop, there is not enough resistance on the shift dogs in the lower unit to cause resistance to the shift cable and engage the shift interrupt system.

Sorry I'm really just trying to get this figured out and I really appreciate your help!

Unless something is wrong... Is the shift cutoff activating when you shift in gear on muffs? Do you see it (the cutoff bracket) moving if shifted out of the water?

No, the shift cutoff isn't activating when I'm shifting on muffs.

Did you read the link in Eric's post on how the system works?

yes, it is - that is why your engine is dying

it is time for a new shift cable

The switch only activates for a split second. It's not like you can shift the gears, have the engine stall and then go look at the switch. You have to watch it while SOMEONE ELSE shifts gear, and even then you have to watch closely...
