I have a 1989 60hp vro evinrude engine that will not stay primed. I have replaced the fuel pump with a aftermarket sierra pump that was suggested from another thread. Here is the situation, the engine will stay running if I keep priming the fuel bulb. I have the vent open on the fuel tank, the pickup tube in the portable fuel tank is intact, I have replaced the fuel filter, and when I pump the bulb with one of the lines to the carb detached I get fuel their. I also pulled the fuel pump out and blew on it with my mouth and it is working correctly. This is the thing I cant figure out, I bought a new fuel bulb with the lines attached and went to pump it, it will not get hard at all, I put the old one on and it gets hard as a rock until of course I run the engine and it losses its prime. I have been fighting this issue for the last week or so any suggestions on what to look for would be greatly appreciated. I am a new member and this is my first post. Thanks again for any help. Also fuel flow from the primer bulb is in the right direction on the new and used fuel primer line.

OK, if the motor keeps running correctly only if you pump the bulb, the fuel pump is bad. Now, we're assuming the motor runs correctly, doesn't need to keep choking / idles fine / doesn't bog etc as long as you pump the bulb.

We'll also assume that the new pump is hosed correctly. Maybe it's just a bad pump out of the box. It happens. Not likely but possible.

As for the old bulb not getting firm, maybe it's an aftermarket one without check valves.

Thanks for your response. It is the new fuel primer ball that does not get hard but the old one does get hard. The motor runs fine, and the fuel lines are hooked up correctly. I will try investigating the new fuel pump again. I took it off before and blew through the supply and it spit fuel out. I also blew through the supply of the carbs the reverse way and no fuel came out, leading me to belive the fuel pump was good. I will try again. thanks

once the motor starts the bulb will not stay hard, the fuel pump is pulling fuel thru it. unless you have an air leak in a fuel line joint. then the fuel pump is going to suck air and loose it's prime. is your new line an aftermarket line, if so it has an arrow on it. that should point toward the motor. also the prime much easier, if you point the arrow to the sky, when you are pumping. lousy check valves.

Sorry it took so long for my response to my problem, I was out of town. Well anyways I was under the impression that the fuel primer bulb had to stay hard when the engine was running, obvisely this is not the case. After further investigation I let the motor run for 10 min. and the pump was pulling fuel through just fine. I also was on the lake yesterday and had no problems. Thanks for the responses. This is a great fourum, and if I have any questions in the future I will use this web site again. Thanks again
