My Grandmother worked in a sweatshop in the 30-40s. She was a sample maker, b/c she was too exacting to work on the line. She captured her machine after she left the factory. It was a belt drive 1942 Singer, single stich.

She used her machine as a vocation and was a tailor for rich women. She made fancy dresses for fancy women. Custom stuff when off the rack was not chic. In her on her own time, she made curtains and other stuff as we needed. She even made cowboy outfits for her grandkids on Christmas as a present.

One day, as a teen, I bought a boat. It was pretty rough. She saw it and made vinyl seat cushions for my '62 Crestliner. She just eyeballed them, cut the vinyl and ran them up. Amazing......

She was in her late70's at this point. Must be nice to be that capable....She could hardly see, at that point.

After she died at 102, I inherited her machine, I was able to make cushions for my 19 foot Searay Bowrider, plus some other applications. Unfortunately Hurricane Sandy flooded the machine.

Not sure of the point of this post. I am amazed how my grandmother (at 78+) made the seats for my boat. It would take me 5 times as long and it would be a lousy job.
