I need to replace the lower unit on my rig (model # 75ELR78C), and I've been told they made changes in 78 so a lower unit a couple years older wont work. Anyone have any idea what this difference would be? I can find lower units all day long that are fairly reasonable in price, but they are almost always 75 - 77. I can't find any from the 78-81 era...Praying I can make something work here. All the gears in this puppy are chewed up.

Appreciate the help

Take a look in the "Top Secret File", the is a conversion chart there for lower units, maybe it will help you out.

You can also try shop.evinrude.com and start comparing part numbers. They have good diagrams.

I think I actually did that, I have an '81 50 evinrude and put a lower on it that was Gold, I can't remember the year of the "new" lower though but all I did was change the oil and adjust the shift cable and it has been fine for 3 years now.

Can't remember what year the gold lower was but I think it was a '78.
