Re: Detroit river

Oh dear lord, if I take it off, a merc is going on. I already have a 96 Bravo 1 and transom mounts. I need to get a few more things for inside the boat and I'll be swapping to a merc. These OMC drives are worth a lot in good shape.

Besides I'd never trade a 502 for that engine :) Well, maybe I would at this exact instant....

Sent you a PM with a lead on a 502 if you're interested - hopefully things aren't bad enough that you need to consider a complete swap..........

Re: Detroit river

I'm a new boat owner in the downriver area this year. Does anyone know if you can call Canadian Customs from your boat (in Crystal Bay) to report in if you have no intentions of making landfall on Canadian soil? (I used to go with friends on their boats years ago before things tightened up) I assume if all parties on board have passports you should be good?

Better late than never to this thread. If you are a boater who wants to boat into Canada from the US or to the US from Canada the best ticket to have is the NEXUS card. With this card, works for both Canadians and Americans you could call Canada or US customs from your boat anchored in either countries waters. What is even nicer you could call either from home before you depart and let them know your intended destination.

If I were you I would invest in the NEXUS card. Everyone on board would have to have the card for it to work. If someone onboard does not have the card then you have to go to land and call customs.

Thanks Rick. I did look into the Nexus card but concluded I would frequently have friends and extended family members on board that did not have one therefore negating the benefit. I took the advice of others on the thread and just stay on the US side of the fence so to speak. I do occasionally travel through Canadian waters - just don't drop the hook to give the revenue seekers a chance to get a few bucks out of my pocket. :)

PS - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of the downriver (US) and Windsor/Amherstburg area boaters that hang out over at Dunbar&Sullivan, Crystal Bay, White Sands, Crossdike, etc.

Re: Lower Detroit River Boaters - check this out

Re: Lower Detroit River Boaters - check this out

I started developing a very basic list of boating points of interest based on using Google Earth as a reference. You can download the Google Earth file from the URL below - if you already have Earth installed you can just click on the kmz file and it will automatically launch Google Earth. Zoom in on the Grosse Ile, MI area - click on the anchors for some basic descriptions of the POI (point of interest). Please note: uncheck all of the "Layers" in the lower left of the screen or the screen will be way too busy with all of the labels. Just looking for this to be something we can all share - please send me a PM with suggestions on descriptions, places to add, or just general feedback. (Canadians too!) The download will expire in about a week - just send me a PM if you read this later and would like a copy.

Edit - updated link with correct file:

Re: Lower Detroit River Boaters - check this out

I don't see any anchors -- Google earth opened as you described and I did un-check the layers and checked the "Temporary Places" that it tries to use from your kmz file. I also tried opening the file directly from Google earth...nothing. Attaching a pic as well of what I see -- did also try to zoom much farther in.

Hey come join us at www.speedwake.com as well. Check out "Official: Michigans East Coast Event Thread", I copied it after the long running "Official: Michigan West Coast thread". Forums > General Boating Discussion > Official: Michigans East Coast Event Thread. Much more active than this site a little slow through the winter but it will pick up like mad shortly.

Re: Lower Detroit River Boaters - check this out

There you go...don't have a lot of time right now, but I'll send you some stuff. It opened into google earth, then I had to re-opn the filed once google earth was already opened. Then it was fine.

Couple real quick:
Portofino -- Wynadotte
Duffy's - Canada
Detroit Light

We can work our way South and North soon :)

Cool - glad it worked. Hopefully you were busy watching the D Wings win their 19th straight at the Joe! I'll add your suggestions and any others I can think of and re-post with a file name that can be incremented with release numbers (i.e. first can be LDR-0001.kmz)

PS - Saw on speedwake that you have your 502 ready to rock - good news there.

Re: Detroit river

Try this version - you will need to delete the contents of your current "My Places / Temporary Places", etc. to purge the old placemarks first before opening this file or you will get double icons.

I added a few locations including your suggestions - let me know if you think the anchor icons and labels are too small - tried to reduce size so they weren't all crammed together.

Edit at 1541 today - deleted old URL link with this update:

Re: Detroit river

No everything looks real good. Not sure how much time you want to spend on it, but we could get an awesome list by the time summers rolls in...since winter just showed up :) If you want more replies post it here: http://www.speedwake.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71174

For whatever reason, it works better for me if i open google earth and then open the file after downloading, maybe it's cause I am a mac guy, not sure.

Post it here too!

Re: Detroit river

Here is an updated list including PIB.

For those using for the first time follow these steps:

1. download the file from link below
2. open Google Earth (this program is available on Google home page if you don't already have it)
3. Delete the contents of your "My Places / Temporary Places" (include the boating locations from previous version of these files)
4. Do "File" "open" and then select the kmz file that you downloaded
5. Uncheck the "Layers" that are enabled in the lower left of the screen
6. Click on the anchor icons for more information and web links

That should do it - let me know if you have any issues.

Re: Detroit river

I was checking out your google map as I am in this area and was doing some additional searching, came across activecaptain website. I thought it was pretty neat thought you may want to chack it out.
