Head south to Lake Erie, Stop at Grosse Ile, (series of 12 islands) that you can go to, in the same area is Crystal Bay (Canada) Topless bay, crystal clear water, can see 25 ft down. You head down that way, you'll be sure to find an island or a nice place to anchor and hang out.

You can launch your boat at Elizabeth park in Trenton.

Re: Detroit river

The most popular spot is the Sugar Island X-dike (rock wall and hole in th wall are what some call it) off the south east tip of Grosse Ile, as noted you can launch out of Elizabeth Park, or Lake Erie Metropark, on a nice day there will be hundreds of boats tied up, partying etc. Crystal Bay used to be the place to be until the newer laws went into effect, and they do patrol it (Canadien waters) so have your stuff in line if you go there, but it is topless there...which is good or bad depending on your situation. And the fact is not many actually participate...

For info on Lake St.Clair you can check out the LSCN.Net website.

I'm surprised there's not many people on this site from the S.E. Mich area considering how many boaters there are. The popular spots on LSC are mostly up the northern end of the lake in the Anchor Bay / Muskamoot Bay areas. It's where most of the partying goes on, couple of sandy Islands that are popular. Personally I avoid this area. Way to many people in dire need of a boater safety class and too much law enforcement activity for me.

Dunbar and Sullivan at the north end of the Livingstone Channel is another place to drop a hook and spend the day or even a weekend. D&S is located at the north end of the Livingstone channel on the west side of the channel. It is in U. S. waters. If you do go to Crystal Bay hope you have a boat with a marine head, porta pottys are against the law in Canada.

Yes this is just about a couple miles North of Sugar and is a little more "chill" than the rock wall, and usually quieter :) I like it here too...Plus snorkeling around some of the old equipment is pretty cool, as long as you've had your shots :)

This is something cool too, but it's way better to go one somebody else's boat :)

Re: Detroit river

I'm a new boat owner in the downriver area this year. Does anyone know if you can call Canadian Customs from your boat (in Crystal Bay) to report in if you have no intentions of making landfall on Canadian soil? (I used to go with friends on their boats years ago before things tightened up) I assume if all parties on board have passports you should be good?

Re: Detroit river

Nope, you can't, you need to register your boat with customs first etc. You need to call and find out the rules since it seems like they change them every year slightly. I stopped bothering...not worth it, if you drive through now it's almost ALL Canadien boats...Like I said I havent done it in a about 4 years since it became such a pain, call to be sure.

Re: Detroit river

I'll keep an eye peeled and say hello if I see you - just bought a 25' Maxum - keeping it at Humbug rack/launch. For those interested in checking the "official" rules on visiting our neighbors to the north, here are a couple of links:

Info on using the (Canadian) CANPASS system: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/canpass/canpassprivateboat-eng.html

Requirements if not using CANPASS: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5061-eng.html#s1x2

FYI - If you're a US vessel heading to Canadian waters from US waters without making landfall in Canada there is no requirement to call US Customs (CBP) upon return.

Re: Detroit river

Well you won't have to look far, Humbug Rack n' Launch is where I am at too, been there since 2007 (this is a new boat for me this year, but had my 211 Liberator there prior to it). It's getting worked on right now but will be back in a week or so.

And yes those requirements are similar to what they were, be careful though, if you don't have the pass, you can't call in from a designated phone while you are on the water and if you throw an anchor (at crystal bay for example), that's the same as stepping on shore. You used to be able to get away with tying up to other boats to avoid this, but I think that has changed as well. I actually had to take my boat to customs before to register it...I didn't read far enough to see if that's still the case.

On your boat you should have a pump out head so this probably doesn't matter, but porta potties are ILLEGAL in Canada, so don't get caught with one there. It's a fairly hefty fine.

FYI Drew and Mark -- the dock guys are AWESOME there, I hate that marina, but the Rack n' Launch is the newest in the area, and the docks are great -- onky at the rack n launch, the rest of the marina looks like they may fall over at any moment... The Gibraltar boat yard is nice though, located right smack in the middle of Humbug. It's odd, I know.

Anyway looks like I'll see you around. Drew will give you his personal cell # so you can call him directly to have your boat thrown in, I don't think Mark will, but he's super helpful if he is not busy. Drew is usually there on his motorcycle and mark will have his F-250 -- not sure if you've met them or not ye, just an FYI.

Drew refers to me as "Captain Work Rat" since I'm always there working on my stuff, I'm a bit anal...and my stuff always looks mint. You'll see :)

Re: Detroit river

Thanks for the info "Captain Work Rat". :) I have met Mark/Drew and I went to school with Mark so have known him for a long time. I've just had the boat a few weeks and haven't been out yet due to weather but have been down a couple of times working on it. I hope to get out this weekend - I'll be the guy taking 30 minutes to get pulled in to the gas dock. (Haven't run a boat in years - last one was a 15' Bayliner with a 50hp outboard.)

I have a question on your cell phone coverage at the crossdike or Stony. Do you have any problems with it trying to roam to Canadian towers or do you get good signal from the US? (Grosse Ile towers) I have a Verizon Droid with the 3G wifi hotspot capability and plan on the boat being my "home office" periodically and need the laptop online.

Re: Detroit river

First things first, you have in in with Mark! I need his # when you get it :)

Cell Coverage is not an issue there, I can't speak to 3G for sure, but I would bet it's good there. I don't THINK you will have a problem with canadian towers, though this has been an issue in the past. I would call ahead to Verizon and let them know so you don't end up getting some huge bill.

I sold my 211 late last year and am making my return to Humbug ASAP. I already talked to mark and Drew this year.

OH, and please use the Humbug Gas dock, so I can go to the private dock, get my Boat US discount, and stay out of your way. :) (seriously though, there are two docks, one gives the discount, the other doesn't, and they are ALWAYS the same price)

Re: Detroit river

I'll work on the phone # - don't have it currently. I'll probably be there tomorrow afternoon throwing my reg #'s on (bought the boat in Ohio) and can ask Mark for it. Thanks for the tip on the gas discount also as I am a Boat US member. What type of boat did you purchase to replace the 211?

Re: Detroit river

Had the 211 with a 350 mag 260 horse, now have the boat in my avatar, Liberator 221. Not a huge change, but I SWORE if I ever found one of the 221's with the 502 mag 420 hors I'd buy it, so I did. They are VERY rare, especially to find a decent one. So I effectively gained 8 inches (2.3ft LOA since this platform is molded, not a bolt on teak platform), 2.5 liters of engine, a cuddy that's laid out better and actually usable, this one has a small potable water system and ****ty King Cobra outdrive (at least its the King, it's the lesser of two evils) well and a way bigger gas bill...

Re: Detroit river

im from the Canadian side of the river and crystal bay has really died of in the past couple years. didn't realize yous had the same trouble that we have coming into US water or landing. for us we have to obtain a 9I-68 pass from customs. still looking into how that all works.I believe it is the same if we drop anchor in US water as it is for yous. things have gotten a lot harder for our neighboring countries to be social, haven't they:facepalm: i understand the safety point of it , but it make exploring our vast water ways a lot more difficult.
