i needed to buy a new battery last season and didnt realize until recently that they gave me a deep cycle. is it ok to use a deep cycle for starting the motor? maybe battery life would be shortened from it?

It is fine to use a deep cycle for starting. It is just bad on a regular battery for a trolling motor. To discharge a regular battery is bad on it.

A deep cycle won't deliver the cranking amps of a starting battery. If your boat is in tune and starts right up you will most likely be ok, but for a boat that is a little more finicky to start you want the right tool for the job. In this case a starting battery.
