Deck prep. question w/ pics

Im going to put new carpet on my wood deck and im not sure if i should treat the deck with waterseal and then fill the voids with wood filler and cover or should i fill the void with fiberglass and then paint over the deck to seal it? I really dont know what i should do, this is just some ideas i have seen on the web. TKS for any help.

i would think of something other than carpet.
you have options ,you could coat the wood with resin(to waterproof) and then paint with a non-slip additive.
or use an vinyl cloth.
carpet would be my last choice
it depends on how good a job u want 2 do and how long u plan on keeping or what u want to get out of it when u sell it.

remember no pretreated wood in an alum boat

Your plywood looks like it is in good shape. I'm no pro, but if it were mine, I'd use 'peanut butter' to fill the places where some of the ply came up. Then, glass the deck. I don't have a problem with carpet.

Ideally you'd fiberglass it. 2nd would be to coat it with epoxy resin. 3rd would be to paint it.

My concern with some of the water seal products is don't they have wax in them? That could mess up your carpet adhesion big time.

the plywood is "marine grade" not "pretreated" and the boat came new with carpet on it, problem is that if i dont go back with carpet i will have to put a 1/4 in peice of plywood on to of the deck, if i dont the alum trim will stick up over the deck and not only look like crap but it would be a real toe kicker. im going to go back with carpet and i just wanted know if i should paint the wood or something before i glued the marine carpet down. what is the differance between "marine plywood and pretreated"? TKS!

Marine grade is not treated. It's just a better quality plywood with fewer voids and better waterproof glue. pretreated I think means pressure treated and we all know what that is.

"Peanut butter" is fiberglass filler. It's resin, a thickening agent, usually aerosil or cabosil and milled fibers or small pieces of fiberglass.
You could probably use just about anything for filler, since you are just leveling the wood. Then glass over the deck, then carpet it.

the proper way to do it and the longest lasting, is to do what the mfgr's do.

fiberglass the floor in......2 layers of 1 oz csm..then a 6 oz finishing cloth or veil.

then ....gellcoat it with waxed gell.

total cost....100 dollars...permanant.

you can carpet over the gellcoat with out any problems.

some guys dont like carpet because of many reasons...the biggest being they fish....and carpets dont like fish guts.

I talked with an old buddy of mine who has worked at a lumber supply for eons and he explained that what most think of treated ply is that it is waterproof, and that is wrong..it is treated with an insecticide of sorts but that marine grade is ideal and for waterproofing applications

good point, if i were using it as a fishing boat thats what i would do, but its a pleasure boat or at least thats what im using it for. I do my fishing at Capt'N D's LOL!

Hello DW..

Resin coat with poly..seal the wood somewhat ( unless you really want to get into glassing with a layer of 1.5 oz mat .. trim and scuff stuff ) and glue your Marine carpet down using glue that you need a resprorator for .

Just make sure your Edges are nice and glued up ( get a tri-roller to press is down ). The notched trowel you buy..well just might want to throw that baby away when your done oh .. oh.. and get a GOOD razor knife with quick blade change thing..and a pack of blades .
