Re: DEBATE

Knoxes,

I see your point. The government does have a lot of things they do to try and help the economy. However, if people weren't so greedy and willing to step on the less fortunate and abuse them then the economy might not need so much regulation. The government tries not to interfere, but sometimes has to because of greedy people abusing the less fortunate. Believe me, I know I don't have all the answers. I don't think anyone does. It is all guesswork. What seems like it will work for one person may not for another. I kinda have an idea floating around in my head that might help the economy out a little. Now in no way am I a socialist. I believe every american should have the same opportunities in life. Now what if we were to institute some sort of government work program for those people who claim that they can't get a job or are disabled. Now I'm not talking about severely disabled or mentally challenged people, rather those who claim they can't work because their foot hurts or something of that nature. We could make them work for their checks. It doesn't matter what they do, be it picking up trash on the side of the road to stuffing envelopes. Any thing that would get them to be productive. Pay them $7.00 an hour for their work. This sort of thing might discourage the abusers from being couch potatoes and mouching off of my paycheck. It would give them an incentive to get off their butts and make something of themselves. What makes them think that they are better than me. I only make $7.25/hr now part-time because of school and I'm not complaining. There are many, many jobs out there. Albeit, they don't all pay $100,000 a year but they are honest work. I don't mind paying taxes if they are used properly, but when I see my uncle laying on his fat butt all day getting free health care, free medical supplies, and a free disability check just because he's too lazy to get off his fat @#$ and work it makes me VERY ANGRY  . Especially since my mamaw who is in her mid 70's and worked all her life (she was a welder in WWII) can't get the help she needs. I think it might help, but with any government program it would require a lot of planning to get it to work properly and then there still may be problems. It's just a thought. What do y'all think? Do you think it would help?

James

Re: DEBATE

Ok fellers I throw my opinion it the ring to see what ya'll think...

GWB may very well win the next election, though he will never get my vote, no matter what he does...

I just love all the political postureing GWB's doing by sending in our troops, just to pressure Saddam... Make me laugh because I can see right through GW's little smoke screen...

Wag the Dog, great film... Guess I'm jaded...

I will say this, Saddam (just like Castro, remember him?)will still be around long after GWB is gone even if he wins a second term, and Saddam will just be someone who the next guy, and the next guy, and so on in line for the office of President and the rest of the world will just have to deal with Saddam untill the man dies of old age, and then we'll have to deal with his predecessor and so on...

I hope for all our hides that I'm wrong here, but thats the way I see it going down...

My 1 cent [Not even worth 2]. How about an Al Sharpton/Hilary Clinton ticket? It would be interesting to see them go up against W.

Re: DEBATE

I like your idea, Jee!

There are not a lot of us that want to see abuses in the system--probably never get rid of them...

Speaking of Hillary, I have to find it ironic that when she came out with her health care proposal, there were these adds that ran to scare people claiming that if she got her way, everyone would be forced into some sort of HMO, and not get to pick their doctor!

Now GW comes up with his medicare reform, and wants to force seniors into HMO's to get prescription benefits!

Re: DEBATE

jee- good recovery. you do make a good point that i agree with- the government can try and lead the economy to recovery or ruin, but it's ultimately the producers and consumers that make it happen. do i sum it up well?

snapper- that's an opinion many have. when you get rid of sadam, there will be just another one down the road. but i think that if we give iraq enough time to cooperate (only another month or so) and give them one final ultimatum, we should serve them the biggest ass-whooping the world has ever seen. and i'm talking about more cruise missiles, dropped bombs, and ground forces than they can even comprehend. take over the whole damn country. make a true example out of them. yes, casualties will be there and innocent civilians will die. but it must happen. the lesson will be learned by our enemies and more importantly the world, that when we talk, we mean it. and when the dust settles and the dead are buried, we will live in a safer world.

wow, that felt good...

Re: DEBATE

You can't be serious in thinking that the Prez cannot affect the economy. Why is he going all around touting his "growth" package to get the economy going again.

The problem is not that he cannot affect the economy (I will agree that he cannot "control" the economy) but that his policies specifically will not work to get the economy going...He is trying to take what Reagan did (arguably as bad as that was for the economy) and simply revisit them.

Now, if you believe the government numbers, we are on a GDP growth rate of 3.0 percent and their own numbers are predicting a 1 trillion dollar deficit over the next 5 years, excluding any cost of any war!!! My Heavens!!! What would the growth rate have to be to get us back to balanced??? It staggers the imagination! Especially when we know we are going to face a big financial hit when all the baby boomers start to retire!

Get your kids used to eating beans! There won't be much more money left by the time they are grown!

Re: DEBATE

Matt, If therewas going to be a real ass-whoop'n, GW would just have to tell the UN to kiss-off and program in the GPS numbers, then push the big red button, or fly in a few B-1's with nukes...

Done! No troops needed, no ground war, no U.S. casualties, and to hell with the "innocent civilians" Iraqies... Then the rest of the world might just think twice before they started messin' round with us...

If the "innocent" people in Iraq had some real guts, they'd start their own civil war and oust their Dictator instead of leaving it up to the rest of the world's forces...

We all saw on TV durring the last go at it that we had with Iraq, how their "elite forces" crumbled under pressure.. Their soldiers came out of their fox holes begging the US soldiers to take them in to surrender.... They are gut-less cowards...

Re: DEBATE

That was funny what you did on the above post. You have now pointed in exact detail the difference between our viewpoints in this debate.

It staggers the imagination! Especially when we know we are going to face a big financial hit when all the baby boomers start to retire!

Get your kids used to eating beans! There won't be much more money left by the time they are grown!

Do you see the difference??? I don't expect the government to pay for my retirement. I am working hard and doing without certain luxuries so I can save and invest. Another note- Once again, what is wrong with having to eat beans if you are in financial crisis??? I have had to eat beans and rice/ramen noodles/chili before for multiple years WITH NO GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE, and I think I read where you have had difficulties before to. It is that attitude that gives the "welfare" class to much "pride" of all things to get low paying jobs and start their lives in proper direction. I hope noone is counting on the government to fund their "steak and lobster" diets and they should be lucky to get free beans.
Oh and I sure hope you are right about declining budgets for some programs..... I hope their is no more of this wasted money left to fund any more freeloaders by the time the kids are grown! Hopefully expectations will have changed by that time on what government should provide.
Just a difference of expectations from government I guess. I wish we would have enough money for the government to make everyone feel like a prince or princess. not likely though ;) :D
oops...time for more meditation!! Sorry EBB!! ;) :D :D
uuuhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm......uuuuuhhhmmmmmmmmmmm

Re: DEBATE

Mattt, I bet that's exactly what they do. We will get bonus pile of intelligence to continue the terrorist war. France and Germany and Mandella will lose all credibility. We will blockade Korea, the Iranians will revolt and the Palestinians will reject terrorism when they see the jig is up. Ok , Maybe thats a little optimistic, but a better shot than sitting around waiting for a nuke while singing folk songs. (Last line self edited in the spirit of friendly debate) :D
