Hey ebb, let's debate something.
Let's debate who will run for the presidency in 2004 and why we think he/she would be a good president.
I think Bush will run and more than likely get re-elected for no other reason than his stand on Iraq and Osama Bin Laden.
There, I have started it so let's get to debating. :D

Re: DEBATE

spinner- i agree. although many dems will try and show that the president has failed us on the domestic side, i don't think voters will have the guts to oust "crazy g dub" during a time of war and conflict. not much of a debate if we agree, huh?

isn't the whole iboats forum section one big debate?

Re: DEBATE

From this Kiwis perspective I like the media presentation of your Mr Powell. He appears to deliver in a matter of fact manner and has appeared consistant throughout his carreer ever since the Desert Storm Operation.
"I like the cut of his jib".
Ross

Yes Ross, he is a good one for sure and if he were to run for the office, people might be surprised at the outcome, but he is not ready yet, but who is to say what the future holds for him.
He is on the move up the ladder though.

Re: DEBATE

Yep, that is why I think this whole Iraq thing at present is a classic wag the dog exercise.
W does not want the same mistake as his father, and not time the war right. That is why there is so big a push to get this war in just before the election. Sad to say, it will probably work.
The economy is screwed, and will do nothing but get worse, but sadly none of the Dems offer much of an attractive alternative. Sadly, their special interests that they need to reward for the big money that elections cost are no better than the special interests that W services now.

I want Clinton back. My 401(k) wants Clinton back desperately. The world community wants Clinton back. And no, not Hillary.

Ya see Tim, we really got to go in and get Sadam. And I'm the only one who really knows how to do it, cause my daddy did it once. I'm gonna finish what my daddy did and make him proud. Sadam's a bad, bad man and I thank him for giving me the opportunity to be re-elected, even though our economy is poor and most people blame me.

Re: DEBATE

Oh well..I expected a lot of Hillary bashing.... and a lot of Hillary is the greatest thing since Bill talk. I think that is a good sign for our country that NOONE seems to think Hillary should be president!
However, Billy-boy did not make the economy do anything.... as GW will not turn it around because of any great action. The economy is driven by fundamentals and pressures that no president can control with precision and has been cyclical since its beginning. ( at least that is what I think with a VERY BASIC understanding of the markets).

Re: DEBATE

Beaux,

You are absolutely right. It amazes me how people expect "someone else" to take responsibility for the economy. The economy is controlled by the businesses and consumers. If a business over-produces, the consumers buy the surplus at really low prices. Once they have all they want of the good or service produced they quit buying that good or service due to Diminishing marginal utility (less satisfaction for each additional unit consumed). Then that company/industry spirals right down the drain. On the other hand. If the businesses would keep a closer eye on the equivalence point of the supply and demand curves, then the economy would remain stable. Granted, the government can do little things to help stimulate or restrict the economy. However, the ultimate responsibility for the economy is given to the public, ALL OF US. Until people stop being so greedy the economy will continue to go into recessions from time to time. It is up to the CONSUMERS and BUSINESSES to distribute and use our limited resources properly. People need to quit trying to put the blame off on others and take responsibility for their own actions.

Re: DEBATE

Another thing, one reason the economy is in a recession now is thanks to BILL CLINTON and the NAFTA agreement. Thanks to him opening the doors, many americans are out of jobs. Our companies are moving to Mexico to pay horridly low wages and then ship the product back up here. A local Levis plant just left here. Now we have fifty-year-old tractor trailers roaming the highways that don't have to conform to our federal safety standards. Yippee, thanks Billeary now I can get clobbered by a runaway truck with no brakes. As far as who will run, I think Bush will and get re-elected. If Powell were to run I would probrably go for him but I don't think he is ready(or is it that the country isn't ready yet?). Who knows, I have an interest in politics myself. NOT to be a CAREER politician, but to get things done. I may someday run for president :D :D . I wouldn't care about getting re-elected. I would only try to fix some of the problems that exist.

Re: DEBATE

jee70611-

you lost me. your first post blames business and consumers for the economy. your second post then blames clinton and government actions.

did i miss the sarcasm or did you completely contradict yourself?

Re: DEBATE

Matt,

I should've thought it out a little better before I posted it. I wasn't contradicting myself really. The NAFTA agreement was one of those things that governments can do to influence the economy. It is only one of many factors of the economy. I was just typing away and forgot about consistency a little. There are many more governmental influences such as price floors, price ceilings, mandates, and other regulations. Ultimately though, it is up the businesses and consumers to control it. Clinton merely opened the doors for the greedy heads of companies to go to Mexico and other countries to pay substandard wages. The consumers(for allowing it) and businesses(for leaving) are the truely responsible parties, but he shouldn't have signed the NAFTA bill in my opinion. There was a little sarcasm with the Billeary comment also. Sorry for any confusion. Let me know if you still don't understand ;) .

Re: DEBATE

Been lurking too long...

jee70611 - taxes, interest rates, spending, policy - just a few items that the government controls (albeit indirectly at times) that drives our economy. Google on the WPA and see what FDR did for our economy - or what Hoover did to our economy.
