Cylinder not firing - Spark Issue

New here, hoping to gather some info. I have a 81 Evinrude 90 hp which has no power on the lake. Found that one of the 4 cylinders was not firing. Checked for spark, and all four had spark so I assumed a carb issue. Bought a carb kit, but before I started a rebuild I check for spark again--- now, no spark on the problem cylinder. So... bought a coil but before installation I checked for spark again. You guessed it, now I have spark again.

So now I'm thinking it is the stator or maybe the power pack. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to diagnose the problem without simply changing out parts?

Not sure if it matters but all spark tests were done with just cranking--- motor was not running
