There`s a guy in Mount Dora, Florida building boat trailers in his back yard you`d better know something about..I got one and it`s not at all what we agreed to...he said it would be aluminum, it was spray painted steel..the two axles are NOT even parallel or in alignment, trailer swings out to side when pulled..not safe to use at all..spring equalizer bracket different on both sides, one hand made from plate steel..hubs are different on both axles, one has nuts, the other has bolts..winch post is welded so tongue weight can`t be adjusted..holes and mysterious welds all over the frame, looks like it was put together in junk yard..as is where is NO GUARANTEE and NO REFUND. I had uship deliver it so didn`t see before I bought..hard lesson about trusting someone...learn from my bad decision.

Do you have a written work order? A signed agreement? A paid receipt? Then you have a basis for a suit. But you're correct. That trailer looks like a POS.

Those are some nasty welds. I would not pull that behind my truck.

I would politely ask for my money back in writing. If he balks, follow up with another request, this time suggest you may go to the DOT (no brakes on a tandem axle, I think they are required by law in FL) and remind him he is liable for accidents that arise from his work. Remeber that Misrepresentation verbally or in writting will override "as is" in most courts.

+ 1 on what Fireman said. I would certainly look into some kind of legal recourse on that POS. That is not good at all and I don't think it is safe to use. Mismatched parts in suspension is probably what makes it run sideways and who knows what else it may cause. The holes and mysterious welds all over the frame, I would worry more about the welds than the holes. I wonder how thick the metal is, if the welds mean he pieced the frame together then he should have plated the outside for strength. You need some real legal advice.

For a trailer to be legal on roads in the US it needs to have a certification plate and title with it, if manufactured by a company/individual doing it as a business.

There is absolutely NO way that trailer would be certified for on-road use. It isn't safe. Those welds on the spring brackets don't stand a chance, I'm guessing one good knock with a hammer would take the bracket clean off.

Doesn't matter that he sold it as-is, no warranty. I'd push the matter, and as others mentioned, involve the DOT and your state AG when needed.

Welds look like the swallows were trying to nest, no penetration, they WILL break.

Trailer problems can be a great source of frustration and inconvenience. It's just not worth $500 difference to buy a junk trailer.

When trailers get as long as a pontoon trailer, they've got to really be built right. Or, you'll be seeing it (and your big old boat) sway in your rear view mirror. That's a pretty frightening sight.

I am not condoning his POS trailer but ALWAYS keep in mind when trying to save money if its initial cost is low it's overall cost is going to be high. You get what you pay for.

If you paid by credit card do a charge back on him. The CC company will want you to wait 30 days though. They also have 45 days by law to reply to the dispute from the time the product was delivered. I just went through this with my CC company and it was pretty painless.

AS said, the weld penetration is not there.

I can do better welds than those with my $70 harbor freight arc welder, on 120volts, without gas.

Send us a link to where this guy is advertizing that he builds custom boat trailers.

Fess up, you got hoodwinked on your used trailer purchase.

My bet is this refurbished (new paint job) used trailer was advertized on Craigslist.
And someone was hungry for a fantastic bargin to good to be true.
Pictures alone would have shown what it was made of and what you were buying.

Trailers can be built and sold all day without brakes in Florida.

It is just illegal to use the trailer on public roads.

WOW! Looked like he tried to use a 110V welder on that thing. Major booger welds on that thing! No way I would put anything on that trailer.
