Good day, My 4 cyl SUV specifications say I can pull 2000 pounds. I would like to pull a 2800 camper. Hitch supplier says I can increase the pulling capacity by 1000 pounds if I install a crankcase oil cooler + tranny oil cooler.
Any opinions or "been there done that" feedback ?
Thank you and have a great day.

There are many more things factored into the towing capacity besides the oil cooler, like brakes, suspension, radiator, gear ratio, vehicle size, engine size, hitch mounts, etc.

Just check the factory tow specs for it, they can be looked up online.

Hitch supplier wants to sell you oil coolers, right?? Think about that.

Yes, he is lying.

Check with the dealer of your mysterious, unidentified SUV.

I agree about the many factors - the worst situation I can think of is to get a heavy load moving and then not be able to stop it or lose control.

However, I did see a chart from Allison (transmissions) years ago which showed the life expectancy of a transmission versus the operating temperatures. The curve was an exponential curve - meaning that the cooler the trans ran the many more times the trans was expected to live. I've never purchased a truck since without one.

At the same time, I've never had a crankcase cooler - suppose that would be beneficial as well.

RUN from that guy. He is asking you to overload the vehicle rating by 50%.

Who will get the blame when the engine does go. I'll bet, NOT the hitch guy.

That pretty well says it all .. tx I suppose I should be looking at the lighter camper model ... 1500 pounds.
Have a great day.

No I have'nt yet. So far I have been pulling my small boat (as per icon) which total approx 600 pounds. It pulls so nicely that I would not know it's there ... at any speed.

I have a camper in mind that weights 1500 pounds and I'll be test pulling it prior to making any purchase decision. Obviously I am tempted by the 2500 pounds camper ..lol but not at the expense or ruining my vehicule.

Why do you ask ? Do you feel pulling max is over-demanding on a vehicule ?

i'm a skeptic. i always beleive a camper weighs at least 10% more than they say it does and a vehicle is rated anywhere from 15-25% more than it should tow.

Ayuh,... That's just plain Stupid,+ Irresponsible....

Coolers will extend the life of a tow unit that's running at or near it's Capacity,..
But it Doesn't Increase that Capacity.....

Agreed,....
People never Add the weight of all the Toys, Tools,+ Supplies they throw into the Camper either...

All that makes sense ... thank you for the feedback. And yea once all the goodies are loaded in the 1500 pounds camper ... it will be close to 2000 pounds in weight.

Funny enough the diesel model sold in Australia is rated at pulling 2000 kilos ... that's 3500 pounds. But the gasoline powered ones sold in Canada do claim it's limit to 907 kilos which is 2000 pounds.

Cheers
