Guys, how the hell do I fix this? It started as a crack with some delaminating that I had a body guy fix..It didn`t hold up. The grey inner part of the hull fiberglass is fine, but that whole area from the chine(see pic) down to the bottom of the Vee is loose for about 2/3 of the chine..Can I dry that out and peel it pack and squirt resin in there or do I need to rip it all away and re- cloth and gel coat it..I`m open to ideas...Not a way to start my boating season!!! thx..Jason

Thanks, its a `98 Seadoo Challenger..Because the crack is so long i don`t think I can really get to most of it from the inside...There is no foam on the inside...The guy that fixed it just fixed that edge on the chine, but failed to attach or redo that lower area and all that flexing made the repair fail I suspect..Boat was taking on water and dripping water from the crack...I`m auto tech by trade and fairly crafty, but is this something a pro should fix??? thx..Jason

best way to get boat off trailer on to its side

best way to get boat off trailer on to its side

Guys, I have a `98 Seadoo Challenger 18ft. that needs fiberglass repair on the chine ..I want to get it off the trailer and maybe set it on some old tires and roll it on its side to make my life easier...whats the best way to get it off the trailer and onto the tires? I`m at a car shop and we have all the normal jacks and also a forklift.. looking for ideas so I don`t create more work hopefully. thanks, Jason

Tires, rope, blankets. Tie it off on the backside to a pole inside the shop. Pull trailer forward slowly placing tires and blankets under her as you move forward. She'll get to the mid point and tilt off, (Watch the top height so the bow doesn't hit lights etc... when then stern comes down on the tires keep pulling forward and she'll come right off. 3-4 guys should be able to push her up on her side and then you can brace her off to work on her. That's how I'd do it.

How much work do you have to do on the chine ? Pics :)

Im not sure about tilting the boat that much..call up your local dealer to see if its ok for the motor to tip that much. And if so ask if there is a direction that it cant be tipped ( oil in the motor thing, fuel tank ).

Cant you just block the transom and fork lift the front .. pull the trailer..block the front and work on it as is ?

I mean sure you can get the boat on some tires ( after you call to see if its ok to do that ) and flip it. But how are you going to get it back on the trailer ?

I could be missing something but it has been a long day for me :) ..

Here is the pics...Its two 2 strokes so I can tilt the thing..I`m gonna remove all the fuel and cap off the oil injection tank. As far as getting it back on I`m going to ask you guys and use the forklift in some kind of fashion..not a real heavy boat like 1800lbs. any tips on how to fix this would be great..I asked the body shop next door and they said I need to remove all the separated fiberglass to see what I have to attach to...what a way to start summer! thanks.Jason

Well I'm not a PRO, but Yacht Dr. Is, but IMHO you are gunna have to repair the from the inside as well as the outside.

I`m not sure that the inside is an option. you can`t get to about a 1/3 of the chine even when you remove the front floor piece. how thick is the hull at that point BTW? open to ideas? thanks...Jason

I agree with Wood. That is probably an inside, outside repair to be able to do it right. If you can stick a screwdriver in there it must be pretty bad!

Its a failed repair Maz..

You need to determine where their repair ended..and then grind that off.

There is nothing that can be suggested with a crack like that without grinding out a bit around the repair Zone.

You Will grind out about 4" around the crack. .. So grind it out gently and explore a little. post up some pics after a little bit of grindin. Dont grind through the hull.

Its a Strake BTW .. Not a chine ;) ..

Ok, I got it off the trailer no problem..Here is some pics.. In the second pic close up you`ll see I marked items in red those are foam pieces..It seems like the whole lower part down to the keel is not attached to the inner hull..Its like they have the outer hull and drop that inner piece in to strengthen it. Is the outer part supposed to be glued to the inner on strake edge. I need better idea how it was built in order to repair it..any help would be great...thanks..jasonPhoto063.jpgPhoto062.jpg

Inside and outside Glass repair is needed..

Sorry ...

That is too big of a tear to just fix from the outside only.

Bummer :( ..

Thanks guys, I`m trying to figure out how to do the the inside...On the outside I have the two edges ground down so the width is about 4 inches...I want to push on the part from the keel remove the looseness and push the top as well and join those two to that inner structure.. Does that sound right? I was gonna use west system epoxy...Do I use mat or cloth to start as I have a bend in there? thanks..Jason

`98 SeaDoo Challenger hull repair...question and updates

`98 SeaDoo Challenger hull repair...question and updates

Guys, I`m coming along with this ok I think...I used the West system 105 to attach the lower part to the inner structure(whats that called BTW?) The self taping screws(see pics) are coming out as they just secure it until dry. My question is..The boat has a couple of voids where there is no backing along the strake..There is no backing for the first foot or so..this is factory...what do I fill those in with? Love that 105 stuff and the easy to use pumps..any input would be great and I already learned the difference between a strake and chine..:D...thanks..Jason

Why did you start another thread on this? You cannot safely do this repair from the outside only. This has already been stated in your other post. You need to read the forum rules.

Re: Cracked Sea Doo challenger hull

im going to merge these three threads into one......but right now the server is doing a back up and it is almost impossible to merge them...

this boat will take serious work.... i fix seadoos all the time......and this is not a job for a first timer with out lots of guidance.

first of all the hull is a ve resin.....you you will need to buy ve resin... not striaght poly...

you canot just shoot resin between the laminate....

the auto body guy tried that....

this is an inside out repair......so you have to get to that are from the inside as well.... the foam has to come out.... its tough to du... you will be doing some cutting on it... bit it can come out.

you could pull the cap... but they are epoxied on .....and to cut that glue is a real pain.

ill post more on now to do the repair after i merge these......DO NOT START ANOTHER THREAD.

Congrats..... You just told off the #1 fiberglass helper guy on this forum and a mod. From what I have seen on this forum (I just read) Oops is one the first people to come and help people in need of fiberglass replacement, and most of the people here turn to him to seek his advice.........congrats

Re: `98 SeaDoo Challenger hull repair...question and updates

First off you weren`t involved so don`t be..Second it was Woodenglass not Opps and he was rude...If I made a mistake please just tell me or PM me..I had a different problem thats why I started a different thread..Getting a boat off the trailer is different than filling a void...As fas as the boat...Its not like I`m not listening to the advice...This is a about a 7k boat not a `67 Chris Craft...To have it fixed by a pro would cost like 3k I imagine and take all summer...To cut the whole boat up in the inside or remove the cap would just basically create more problems than a I already have and IMO not be worth it for that boat..I`m gonna have to the best I can do with it..Thank you for the advice so far as I will not post anymore about it...Just give it my best shot....regards ...Jason
