So many like me love fishing the flats and chasing trout in 1-3ft of water. That bit me in the ass finally. I was changing out my water pump and noticed this crack in the lower unit. Pressure tested and no leaks, no water in the foot oil. Sanded it to expose the crack. Looks like something inside pushed it out but it runs and sounds perfect. Couple weeks ago I hit a sand bar and my only guess is the prop shaft housing might have shifted and hit it. Is this really worth replacing the lower unit or could I weld it up and keep running? Again, it runs perfectly with no weird noise or movement. Moving prop by hand also don't feel anything strange.

Well, it looks like a bad crack, but if there’s no leaking, problems, noises, etc., then maybe just run it. Maybe sand/ file it smooth and apply a “patch” of JB Weld over the entire cracked area…about 1/8 inch thick….then file/sand smooth several coats of paint….and go run it. Or, you can take the gears out and have it welded ( which will be quite a job and expense$$$$)

I'll be calling insurance Monday to see if they'll cover a new one. If they won't ill be sanding and epoxy welding.
