I am rebuilding one of my transom shields and found some corrosion on the inside at the base of the shield. There is also some pitting on the housing, where the raw water intake exits the shield. All corrosion is on the inside of the shield. What is the best way to neutralize and fill/protect these areas, so the corrosion doesn't progress any further?

Remove, disassemble, bead blast, clean, fill with favorite filler, repaint, and reinstall.

Don, it is out of the boat and I am in the midst of getting it dismantled ... if I can get the steering fork out of the darn thing ... grrrrr!

Bead blasting? Are there companies that handle such a thing or is it more a DIY?

The overall condition of the shield is good, so I was hoping I could just treat/touch up the areas that are in need of attention, then apply a fresh top coat of factory paint. I understand that it is better to leave the factory paint intact, as much as possible. What filler would you recommend?
