I think I finally figured this boat motor out. Its a 1966 Merc 500 I thought i wasnt getting any water to the engine. But found out the tattle is clogged in the motor somewhere. I removed a screw from top of the engine and poured some water down through the water jacket and it seems to come down along the exhaust tubing. Correct me if I'm wrong but the water flow, is it supposed to go from the water pump up through the motor and then down and out through the prop? As you guys can tell this is my first boat and outboard motor, so I'm just trying to figure how the water is suppose to flow since my tattle tale is all clogged up. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, jeepdude09

some water does leave the engine through the exahust and the prop but you should be getting a steady flow through the tall tale. disconnect the hose from where the tall tail is going and see if you have flow there when running if not move on to thermostat etc working your way back until you find the clog. if you have the unit off you can hook a garden hose to the copper water pipe and see if water flows with the Tstat removed this would be good. then you know you clog is between there and the tall tale which is smaller in diamiter than anywhere eles in the system remve the tall tale and run a hanger carefully through this to clear it out. if the impeller hasn,t been changed recently it would be a good idea to replace it scuffing and scoring form sand dirt etc can harm the surface of the impeller cup causing loss of pressure. the impeller may look god but may have lost it,s ridgitity also reducing pressure needed for a good flow hope this helps

Re: Correct me if I'm wrong.

Just wondering if i cannot get the tattle tale unclogged will it have any adverse effects on the engine?? Im thinking of putting a fitting in place of that screw on top to the motor where that screw is to run a new tattle tale line. I figured all a tattle tale does is acts as a visual to let one know if their water pump is working or not. Any suggestions???

best to have it working or how will you know when it fails also impeller particals can be caught up in side the jackets and even the head area so don,t take chances on not figuring this out. repair beats rebuild anydayit shouldnt be to hard to remove the Tall tale and the hose and see if your getting a stream to the Tall tale. if you are either buy the kit for your engine and replce the hose. I bought my tall tale kit from iBoats.price was ok
