I just got this 1966 Merc 500 from my uncle. I finally got it running thanks to the help of you wonderful people on here. Got it running and noticed no water comming from the pee hole. I took the lower unit off and found that the inpeller was indeed all shredded. I then ran a coat hanger up as far as i could up what seems to be a copper tube running from the lower unit to the power head. I did retrieve two pieces of the impeller. But I still seem to have a clog somewhere. I tried running weed trimmer line up trough the same tube and it stops and also took the tube off of the pee hole and tried running through that way and no luck. I also tried blowing into the tube with compressed air and no luck either way. Im stumped, so i figured id ask you guys on here before i have something really screwed up. The boat has been sitting in a shed for 15 years so who knows what it could be. Is there any other way of getting into the water jacket to try to clean some gunk out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im trying to get this thing running on a limited budget so I would hate to have to take it to get serviced. Thanks, jeepdude

reverse flush with a water hose through the thermostat housing best way is to remove the thermostat and get an adapter from the garden hose to a fuel line and stick it in there without the lower unit on the clamp the garden hose on the water tube on the botm and flush that way again keep doing this until you have a good stream of water going out then themostat hole you should be good to go. I had pieses of a exploded impeller in the housing for the thermostat and coming out the exhaust cover I believe I have fixed it

There's no thermostat on those motors, tilt the motor up with the LU off and pull out the copper tube then check for impeller pieces by blowing back down the tube. Take a flashlite and look up into the bottom of the power head where the copper tube was to check for pieces stuck in there.
If you have to you can remove powerhead from driveshaft housing to clear any pieces.

Alright ill try that then. Thanks for the info. I have one more question. Its seems like the inside of the motor is all gunked up since i cant even get air to move into the motor from the tattle tale line. there is a screw on the very top of the motor. Will that give me access to the water jacket? I was thinking of maybe pouring some CLR or Lime away into the water jacket to hopefully loosen up the gunk. Any ideas??
