I have a 1972 16' sylvan boat with what appears to be a crude rack and pinion set up (has a tube behind helm and an extremely rigid cable running to motor) my question is , is that I would like to convert it to a modern system (old one is almost unusable) but am not sure if I should go rotoary or R&P. My console is about 18" wide. It is a 40h.p. johnson if that makes a difference as well. Any input would be appreciated.

Welcome to iboats.

Makes no difference either system will work. Some consoles are not big enough for rotary so do all your measurements before you buy.

I've had brand new versions of both and prefer the rotary. I can, however, see how the rack helm would be a little more durable. It had more slop though in my opinion.

Re: Converting to a teleflex steering system

Thanks for the input, I've been on teleflex's web site and haven't found a good method of making sure I have enough room for a rotary. Any suggestions?
