I have a 1978 35 hp electric start johnson motor. Is there a add on tiller kit to convert from remote to tiller contols or is this a lost cause and just get a tiller motor. If there is, how and where might I find it.

Re: conversion from remote to tiller

That engine was available with a tiller, and the conversion is pretty simple. Go to:

http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

Select Johnson, then drill down to your model. Look at the "exhaust housing" blowup, where you'll see the tiller stuff. You'll also need a starting switch. and some other parts.

If you go to www.tcoutboard.com and call them, they can probably supply all the parts you need, used, as can most any outboard junkyard, given the popularity of that engine. I'm sure the conversion parts you need don't just fit that year's 35hp.

Re: conversion from remote to tiller

If your motor has a bar that sticks out the front for the remote steering to connect to then many tiller handles will fit, even other brands, so you shouldn't have problem with the conversion. The only thing that can be a a little difficult is connecting a throttle cable, when I did mine there were no parts or kits available, so I needed to make a small bracket for the cable to connect to inside, it was very easy though.
