Same here. Worked good for me until I took up surf casting. Learned pretty quickly why guys use thumb chaps and band-aids...lol
When I took up surf fishing I quickly switched to spinning reels After my first trip.

Love conventional reels but you throw them out on how to use or not use and yikes! It is always a argument. What ever floats your boat use and learn from your mistakes what ever works for you go for it. I love mine the newest one I have is at least 20 plus years old still working for these fat thumbs.
dingbat that there reel you have is a beauty.... When I was around 10 years or so old would practice in the street with the plastic casting plugs and everybody that drove by would always ask me catch anything. 🐟

You Plug?
I use a spinner to throw light metal, 1-2 oz, but 95% of the time I chunk, 6 to 8 oz. + bait.

Loading a 12’-6” fast action rod with a 10-12 oz. payload is murder on the finger.

Nine times out of ten, online arguments are meant to antagonize and/or born of limited experience with the subject matter.

Head over to the surf and distance casting boards and you hear no such arguments.
