Re: Container ship vs reef last week

Buddy of mine was sailing his trimaran down in South America somewhere. Whacked a container in the middle of the night and fubar'd the boat big time. Managed to get his ex-girlfriend & her two dogs into a life-raft as the boat sank. The four of them bobbed around for the better part of two days til rescued.

Far as my personal salvaging goes I try to limit my operations to looking for 'Square Grouper'. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 kilos has washed up in the past month! Lot more money in that vs pirate treasure?

Too bad it happened at night. If it was daytime the pilot could have used the " I could'nt see the reef cause the containers were stacked too high" excuse:D

Seriously, How did this modern vessel w all the best nav. equipment I assume, end up on the reef? Engine or mechanical failure Is the only thing I can fathom, besides incredible human error. I read the captains been arrested, I assume for negligence, what did or did not he and the crew do??

The bulb at the bow is there to create a bow wave which is out of phase with the normal bow wave of the ship.
This reduces wavemaking resistance, and saves fuel. It only works at one cruising speed, however.
This is why they are not used on recreational vessels.
