Re: Considering going to the dark side...

bunker's SS is one of the nicest looking Starcrafts I've seen (I'd love to swap my boat's interior into his exterior). bunker, a brand new motor of appropriate horsepower for your boat would be in the $9k range. When looked at from one perspective, yes it could seem kinda silly to put a $9k motor on essentially a $900 boat. However, from another perspective, your boat is beautiful, trailer freshly redone, and an equivalent new rig would be approaching $30k. A $9k repower doesn't seen like such an unwise investment. And this is of course going all the way to the brand spanking new extreme. There lots of fully supported reliable newer motor options between a $1000 1973 Johnson 85 V4 and a $9k E-tec 90 :) I wonder how much a 5-8 year old Yamaha 4-stroke would be?

Great you're keeping your SS. It is an inspiration to me to get mine looking near that nice. A good used motor from a reliable shop would probably only run you a couple grand. You and your family still have a lot of time to recoup that. And you've got the hull in mostly new shape, and now know how to fix most things on it. I've got over 8 grand tied up in my 61 Crestliner, and close to 7 in my 74 holliday jet. Crestline has paid for itself thru pleasure, and I'm sure the jet will too. Recently had a guy want to trade me a 33 ft motorhome for my crestliner, worth way more than the boat, and my wife said don't. After fighting with me before and after I bought either boat, she wants me to keep both. Might have to keep this one a bit longer, only 32 yrs so far.
