So a late 80s inboard Correct Craft has caught my eye and I am thinking about the unthinkable....SELLING my SS! We are going to the lake this weekend to get my boat on the water and checkout the Correct Craft to see what the wife thinks. It is 19' inboard but closed bow...she is not super excited about the closed bow. A friend of a friend is also going, who I have searching for a good first boat for him for the past month. I have not or probably, will not find him a more suitable candidate than my 18' SS. If he is interested after a test ride in my boat, I just might let it go for the right price....which would be somewhere around $3.5K. If he isn't interested I am fairly certain my boat won't be too hard to unload.

You can check the boat here

Ok mob...let me have it. Why should or shouldn't I peruse this.

A ski boat is a ski boat only. If you're an avid skier go for it. There isn't a lot of room inside with the motor box right in the center of the floor. With no open bow your space will be really limited. My friend has a virtual twin to this boat. It's a good ski boat but little else. If your going to the dark side there are many better, more versatile choices.

Why you turncoat. :p Nah, Bunker, go for what turns you on. Like JD said, it's a single function ski boat. That's OK if that's all you want to do. Your wife is right about the closed bow and I have a closed bow. Just one question for you - does the SS do everything you want it to do - fish, cruise, ski, tube, etc.? The SS is a roomier boat for a family. My 2 pennies.

traitor . No, it's whatever floats your boat. I've got a real soft spot in my heart for my crestliner, and for my starcraft, even tho they are quite different. Inboards have good things about them too. The engine does take up a lot of room tho. Just make sure it's what you want before you do it.

I let hatred of leaking reevets lead me to the dark side..... (I should have bought the Islander)

now I spend my nights with grinders and resins longing for the sound of an aluminum bow smacking into a wave.....

Re: Considering going to the dark side...

My SS has done everything I have asked it to so far. I think my biggest fear is that Mercury hanging on the back. It has been reliable, but is always in the back of my mind. Parts are getting harder to source which is not the case for a small block Ford. My old SS sure has the "look" on the water but the looks of those old inboards are hard to beat. The sound of an inline Merc is pretty sweet but the rumble of a 351 is addictive too. These are all the little things. It will take putting the wife and kids on the Correct Craft and taking it for a cruise to see if it will fit our little family. My wife will have to be comfortable driving it, the SS she doesn't really care to drive. So I have a lot of considerations to think about, and imam a little impulsive. Heck I drove 200 miles to get the SS and bought it without even hearing it run. Either way I will be fine, I already own a great boat.

Hi there, I am fairly new here, but I assume (there's that word again) going "darkside" means going glass over tin. I am a biker and going darkside there means a car tire on a bike. I appreciate the info and pardon my knuckle headiness.

Have to keep remembering you will have give up about 1/3 of the people room with a Inboard. If your motor is questionable then to replace it is a lot less $ ,than to replace the whole boat/ Gas consumption - giving up a easy to pull boat. Lots to consider . Good luck Plus dont forget if you go Glass and have any floor or transom problems it is a Royal P.I.T.A. to repair, and very costly.

If you do nothing but ski, sure. Otherwise, PASS. People are still able to source parts for Chrysler outboards. It'll be awhile before a classic Merc Tower is causing you parts grief. You'll hate the room in a closed bow with a giant engine pod in the middle of it. Sure there's lots of boat that may be worth going to the "dark side" for but in my opinion, an old inboard ski boat ain't one of them.

EZ said it all. i wouldn't pass up the right glass boat....but that ain't it given what you describe as your needs. you could repower the SS for what the difference would cost you and have a known boat.

I think this might be the key here. You can pick up good outboards all the time. I've had to get 2 for my crestliner. But if the mrs isn't happy with it. Course you need to be too.

Strange turn of events...the wifey says to me last night, "our boat is way nicer than that other one.". I guess the old tin boat has grown on her. It looks like I will remain a mob member. A modern repower might be the best solution.

Good Choice!

I run old Mercs on my boats, 1958, 1963, and 1974. www.oldmercs.com is a great resource for parts that you are unable to find on iboats.

Guess who has the brains in the family? LOL Now if the right boat comes along listen to the lady. BTW - Your Starmada membership has been transferred to your wife's name. She is the real TinHead.

From your earlier comments you have concerns about having an old Merc (or any old motor) so a re-power is probably the best choice.

dang Kev...."welcome bacK"?? you'd already drummed him out of the Starmada and sliced off his stripes just cuz he posted a Heretical Musing? this starmada membership is a tenuous thing......they got some serious rules of decorum here, for an unruly mob!;)

Bunker, that's great to hear for 2 reasons. her statement is an endorsement of not just the boat but her male's great efforts on it

Re: Considering going to the dark side...

Never understood the obsession with Starcraft. I don't see them too much in MN where every citizen is legally obligated to own a boat but when I do they are usually beat up, old junk floating ot on the lake. What I will say is I've seen a huge surgence of very high end ski boats but nobody is ever using them for tow sports. The kind with the tower that looks more like a radar arch that are so custom painted you do a double take. Again they must know something that I don't but I see a lot of retirees riding in these things.
