Compass heading

Are you planning the 55 mile trip with no charts or no other means of navigation but just a compass?

Gee, do you know why they call that kind of navigation "Dead Reckoning"? Because if you mess it up you are dead...

At least get a chart and pick out some waypoints. That way you can tell earlier if you are lost.

BTW cell phones do not work offshore, as there are no cell towers out there. You are OK out to a couple of miles, I would think, but gaps in coverage can easily happen. VHF radio is good for 5 miles, depending on antenna height. Sat phone is good anywhere.

Or use an old trick that I have used.------On the way out ---" trees on the left"-----On the way home ------" trees on the right "------As others have said you need to plan carefully for this venture.

it was a nice trip to Catalina about 3 hours there and 3 hours back, thanks for all the grate old trick and help with imfo bunch of grate guys here.

Use to run to Catalina with a friend if we could see the island we would go and reverse the compress numbers on the way back. Might not be the right way but always got us back to the launch.
