Long story short - I have a 1987 Starcraft Sfm with a 90 hp 2-stroke mercury outboard that I rebuilt. What are the proper operating steps to use the cold start lever on the control box? Thanks.

Re: Commander controls

Use it to increase idle speed until the motor warms up. I've had a couple motors with that on the remote but never needed it,

Re: Commander controls

The problem I am having is I can't advance the throttle with the lever raised and I can't raise the lever if I have moved the throttle

Right, it's locked out in everything but neutral ( at least on the newer boxes ) You raise the lever about 3/4 up, hit the choke/ primer and then turn it over with the key. If it does not start, choke it again and raise the lever all the way. It should start then. When the engine is warm, lower the lever. If it gets rough when you lower it, keep it raised until it smooths out and wait for it to warm up more, then lower the lever and you can enjoy your day.

Re: Commander controls

First start of the day

Set the engine vertical
Squeeze the bulb till firm
Lift the fast idle all the way
Turn the key to on and push in for roughly 5 seconds.
Roll over to start
If engine hits great
If not repeat till it does....the longer it's been sitting without using the longer this takes

Once boating, if engine hasn't been off very long 15 minutes or so, just turn the key
If it has, fast idle alone may work
If that doesn't work, give it a little push on the key
Or do the key push first

You'll learn what works best and when.

+1

Just remember, if you have issues idling after it's been rev'd up for 15-20 mins when you put the lever back down, don't use raising the high idle lever as a fix to shift into gear, look to the idle mixture or idle stop.
